It's the German term used for first-person shooters, "ego" basically standing for first-person. Doesn't matter what sort of shooter it is, Ostriig - unless they use the same term slightly differently in other countries.
Ah, thanks for the clarification! I might just be remembering it wrong, maybe they were using it as a synonym for FPS altogether.

Personally, I tend to think that "ego shooter" sounds like the first Freudian FPS. Developed by id software, no doubt. :p

I'm up for an atmospheric shooter, doom style (it seems) with maybe some cryostasis-esque combat (meaning: slow and clumsy and reliant on scarce resources). basic story I know so far is nice.

WP: What about gameplay? Whenever something comes out on the PC and console, a lot of PC gamers complain that he game has been "console-fied." What are we looking at, control-wise, for the PC version versus console?
DL: I want to make it very clear that our PC SKU is our lead SKU. This is not a port. We're putting everything into the PC. The controls on the PC are going to be designed for PC gamers, exactly what they're used to.

http://games.on.net/article/7836/Metro_2033_-_Technical_QA) Technical Q&A with Chief Technical Officer, Olez Shishkovtsov
He talks about the technical specifications of the game and its engine, the whizbang DX11 and PhysX utilised, the hardware requirements, etc. An interesting read overall.
Quote:
games.on.net: Does your engine handle large open areas as well as the smaller tunnel environments, given that Metro 2033 is focused more on the claustrophobic environments?
Olez: Yes, it does. We primarily focused on the small areas because of the settings in the story, it’s not a fundamental limit of the engine. There are a few levels which are really big in Metro 2033.
