Metro has russian fuck it stamped on it. It boils like water in samovar. The blood surge is instoppable.
It makes great tea, babushka.
Like no other country. when the blood climaxes in great fountaining geysers, I know. The doctors, their tongues tied in knots, speaking twists in lies. They do not understand I understand psychologies more.
Idiots all of them, babushka. Stolichnaya for radiation. It sings in my throat. Truth never felt so great.
I go home and play good game. Capitalist scum in my path will know the flying furies of my opinion. I will staple their heads to the wall with my east european keyboard.
I tip my samovar. My victories urge me forward. Ah, my babushka, a sip, a sip of vodka. It gleams in your throat.
Worry not. by evening, all capitalists shall know: we make better tea.

I forget the name of that shady guy who you team up with before going into the city, but did anyone else notice him calling Artyom 'Marked One' just around the point when you make the scripted failed leap onto the car? I may have just dreamed that up but I am pretty certain he did. May just be some in-joke as they were part of GSC at some point or whatever I dunno

you have those flashes everytime something happens plotwise (khan gives his peace-speech), everytime you can do something (when you listen to ppl stealthed you get a flash when they finish their conversation, giving you a clue when the patrol cycle starts) and everytime you finished something (part of mission). And no, there is nothing you can do during the game I know of, everything is related to the last level imo. I played it 2 times and everytime I got the choice, meaning I could decide to finish/abort the mission. depending on my binary choice there I got 2 endings. each of the dreamsequences have only one solution and I played the game super-aggressive (killing everyone, no ammo for the poor) and super-stealthed (no shooting, even monster-evading, all ammo given to helpless, nothing bought for myself, refused every gift) and got both endings.
Having finally finished it on PC for myself, I can confirm that you are completely full of shit (of course I could've said that weeks ago based on my experience with the 360 version, but I wanted to make sure that the karma system wasn't somehow broken on the PC). Came out of the last dream sequence, dark one lying dead on top of the tower, and no choice to shoot the satellite targeter. All right and proper considering I didn't take the postcard from Hunter, didn't talk to Artyom's stepfather before leaving Exhibition, stole the money out of the busker's cup in Exhibition, told the kid in Riga to fuck off, killed all the bandits in Dry (including the guy hiding out in the box maze getting high), didn't listen to any of the singing pipes, killed
everybody in Frontline (including the wounded commies and commie prisoners), didn't pick up the casette tape from the commander in Hole station, ran away from the Dark Ones in all the dream sequences (yes, you can do that), took the kid's mom's money, killed
all the Nazi's in Black Station and the surface level that preceded it, and didn't talk to Khan in Sparta base.
Here's how it works: The different karma events (of which there are actually quite a lot. That list up there is just what I can remember off the top of my head) have different point values assigned to them. If you have points above a certain value at the end of the game, you'll have the option to shoot the targeter and get the good ending. Some actions massively outweigh a lot of other things (playing the radio message, not killing anyone in Black Station and Frontline).
All in all, I quite liked Metro, but it kind of suffers from Crytek-itis, in that it's pretty excellent when you're fighting humans, and you can sneak around and be a bit of a bastard to them, but when it starts throwing monsters at you it gets to be a bit of a slog (especially with the weird monster collision issues). If I hadn't already spent more hours than I can count with it, I'd probably revisit it pretty quickly. As it is, I'll maybe give it another go in a couple of years.

well, i wrote how I encountered it. I don't know why I got both endings then. and here a quote:

so I can't see where I stated it as fact that somehow could justify your primitive reaction.

Old news, but it hasn't been posted here yet. A sequel, Metro 2034, (
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/metro-2034-revealed-by-thqs-bilson/) has been confirmed.
(
http://www.videogamer.com/news/metro_2033_was_very_profitable_for_thq.html) Apparently Metro 2033 sold well for THQ and recouped it's budget quickly, due it to the lower development costs of games from Eastern Europe.
(
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=413957338821) Free DLC included in a patch due out tomorrow. It sounds quite promising.

The long-promised Ranger Pack DLC will be hitting Xbox LIVE and Steam next Tuesday, August 3rd.
It will cost 240 Microsoft Points on Xbox, whilst PC gamers will get it for free as part of an automatic Steam title update.
The Ranger Pack adds new weapons, new achievements and the deadly ‘Ranger Mode’ game rules. In standard Ranger Mode, ammo is dramatically reduced and all weapons cause more damage. Your foes are deadlier than ever – but so are you! ‘Ranger Hardcore’ adds an additional challenge as the HUD is totally removed, creating the most immersive Metro 2033experience yet. Rise to the challenge with two new weapons – the Heavy Automatic Shotgun, and the Volt Driver, Miller’s signature gun. New achievements and gamerscore are also up for grabs.
We're REALLY sorry to have kept you waiting so long, but can't wait to hear your thoughts on the new experience when the DLC drops!

Sounds like fun. Making Metro 2033 more survival horror-y and less CoD-inspired sounds like a pretty damn good combination. Frantic run and gun action instead of thickly cloying tension when you're down underground - it just seems like a patently obvious mismatch to me. The HUDless thing is also good, but the game already minimises HUD usage anyway.

No HUD and appropriately higher damage all around? Yeah, definitely sounds interesting. The sloppy gunplay was the biggest fault I found with the game, and I was also disappointed that the devs went so far to integrate feedback in game context but then seemingly turned around right at the end and slapped on some forceful HUD elements, so this might just be worth a replay for me. Just hope that in raising the damage dealt and taken they manage to allow for a more tactical approach rather than just more twitch gaming with shorter exchanges.
