The volumetric lighting on DX10 just about murders the frame rate in places. I never knew those gawd rays could be that expensive on the clock cycles. How's it holding up for peeps with the DX11? Faster/slower? Playing it on Very High seems fine on a 4890 except for that.
EvaUnit02 on 21/3/2010 at 19:18
Since you have a HD4890, wouldn't it actually be using DX10.1, not just 10?

You're right actually... but somehow I liked FEAR2 solo, so I'm giving Monolith benefit of the doubt for the time being. Also, please note that unless stated explicitly, in no way will I ever issue remarks about the multiplayer aspects of recent games. Whatever the game or almost, I just can't do MP. It just bores to hell me after a few minutes and I end up going for some more solo.
FEAR 2's MP was tacked on and I didn't play it either, bar one TDM round which was laggy as hell (listen servers suck).
The points still stand nonetheless, regardless if anyone actually played the MP component or not and can't be easily dismissed. The implementation was still optimised to the PC's strengths (and include fundamental features of Vs. MP on PC, namely an anti-cheat solution) and as a result it turned off players and failed to develop a following.
FEAR 1's MP did have a significant enough following due to the free Combat client, so there was a built-in playerbase that they failed to exploit by going backwards. Eg FEAR 2 did launch without the popular slo-mo DM mode. It was added in a patch a few months later, but it was a little too late and the ship had long since sailed.

Just finished this and it left me with a big smile across my face.
I can't help but think now, how it would have been if the world would have been open, Stalker style.
Great game, nevertheless. :D

GameTrailers (

Question to those of you who have played this game - how
"horror" is it? I feel like sharing that I'm inching my way closer to the Brain Scorcher building in SoC and have just encountered what appeared to be the ghostly manifestation of a Bloodsucker. And while it's creepy enough in broad daylight, outside, with the experience of X18 behind me I'm quite inclined to believe that once I get inside the Brain Scorcher's layer that sort of apparition will be used to great effect
to make me shit myself in abject horror.

so what now. stalker or metro2033 ?
Xenith: What ending did you go for ? I'm curious if there are more than the 2.

@ Ostriig
I thought the indoor levels of Metro were pretty much similar to Stalkers underground. It definitely gave off the same vibe most of the time. There are sounds used in this game, that were used in Stalkers underground too. So really, it can't go wrong with keeping you on the edge.
@ mothra
I wasn't aware there were two endings up until I finished it and checked out different sites and such. Apparently I got the "peace" ending because I did some things throughout the chapters, though the other "regular" ending seemed just as ok to me. So I didn't really go for any of them. I just explored a lot and payed attention to all the crap that was going in the stations.
Just a thing I noticed. If you talk to Khan in the church, at the end of the conversation the screen flashes (and for some reason the sound that comes with the flash sounded just like a F.E.A.R. 2 apparition). Well, I had the same flashes happen throughout the whole game and I wonder if those are an indication if whether or not you're heading for the alternate ending or not.

you have those flashes everytime something happens plotwise (khan gives his peace-speech), everytime you can do something (when you listen to ppl stealthed you get a flash when they finish their conversation, giving you a clue when the patrol cycle starts) and everytime you finished something (part of mission). And no, there is nothing you can do during the game I know of, everything is related to the last level imo. I played it 2 times and everytime I got the choice, meaning I could decide to finish/abort the mission. depending on my binary choice there I got 2 endings. each of the dreamsequences have only one solution and I played the game super-aggressive (killing everyone, no ammo for the poor) and super-stealthed (no shooting, even monster-evading, all ammo given to helpless, nothing bought for myself, refused every gift) and got both endings.
I hoped there was more to it.
hopefully there will be hardcore mods, just like in STALKER you wade in ammo and the whole "survival" thing gets pathetic after the 2nd level when you basically are the richest man on earth.
Xenith on 22/3/2010 at 11:51
About the ammo. Maybe it's because I'm too trigger happy or didn't aim always for head shots, but for some reason I did have some trouble with not having ammo at all (not even throwing knives, but that's because I suck and wasted them) at a couple of points and had to resort to stealth and knife.
Also I wish there was more done with the ghosts. I didn't really encounter more than ... one? ... I think (besides the Khan level I mean).
mothra on 22/3/2010 at 12:17
there are a few in the tunnel defense level (where you have to blow up the tunnel and close the vents) but that's it besides dreamsequence and khan level.
steath playthrough: last level: 437 military rounds
aggressive playthrough: last level: 580 military rounds
both on hardcore and I NEVER bought ANYTHING at the shops. no ammo, filters, armor, nothing, nada. Gave all my money to the poor.
I call this seriously ANTI-survival. In the "librarian" level I was so bored I killed each and every of the monsters. stupid walking backwards not needed if you swim in military grade ammo. not ONCE did my gasmask break. the copy-cat monsters from STALKER were deployed in the worst fashion, making them actively non-scary. their 2d/3d artists and coders should get a raise, the level/game designer should get fired immediately. yeah and the guy who thought voiceovers at the start of a level (that even give away the next level) are a good idea should follow him
