http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2010/03/29/full-RTR2C7XI_.jpgThis morning in Moscow a couple of suicide bombers killed nearly 40 people in the metro. I heard about it on the radio about 15 minutes ago. Only a little bit eerie since I've been playing Metro 2033 for the last 2 days.
They had some interviews on the radio with a couple of people. one was a Russian Correspondant with the CBC and the other one I didn't quite catch who he was but the interview was fascinating.
He basically said he wasn't surprised... the terrorsits said they had declared a holy war across all of Russia, and when asked if he was saying that the FSB was lacking in operational foresight, he just said no... that they aren't impotent, but that how can you possibly stop every terrorist activity?
I'm not doing it justice but that seems very calm and pragmatic when you're talking about extremists blowing up your subway and your family with it.
That coupled with the first guy saying that (despite the article I linked to) that there was very little panic if at all. He said within the first few seconds people were panicking and running away but after the dust of the explosion settled people were calm and quiet and moved out of the way of the emergency and SF people. That they were very organized and efficient.
I don't think it would have happened that way on this side of the world.
Very interesting cultural differences that way. I hope nobody here from Russia takes offense. But Ivan... you've got nerves of titanium.

I think the main reason terrorism shakes up the West so much is because of how soft we are. In a coddled, protected society it comes as a real shock when the "It won't happen to me" attitude goes out the window. Oddly enough, the people I know that don't have warm and cozy lives weren't actually all that bothered by 9/11. Its only the people who have never been faced with mortality that cry/piss/moan about bombings that didn't effect them personally.
Plus, do these terrorist dudes really think their going to conquer Russia?

They probably just want their little piece of Chechnya to turn it into a little misogynist theocracy, which makes it seem all the more petty. Why go 1000s of miles to destroy the lives of innocent people 99% of whom probably could care less about that little corner of Russia just to make a parochial little political point?
I guess it's still expecting too much to think some groups will grow up and negotiate things like responsible adults. Not saying that it's easy or painless, but their's is not the first territorial dispute in the world; there's lots of experience with mediating the different sides in different cases that offer a better model than this.
What's also strange is the idea that bombing innocent people in Moscow is really going to cow the Russian gov't or bring the people on their side. It just invites more retaliation. At this point they're probably just lashing out in a nihilist daze. What's the point? More innocent people suffering for nothing.

And if time taught us anything about slavic countries it's how entangled dazed nihilism and morbidly pure idealism are.

I travel through one of two subway stations where explosions happened twice a day. It's actually quite depressing, but people are relatively calm around here. I think people around do understand that the more you panic, the more successfull terrorists attacks are.
Speaking about the Caucasian (includingm but not limited to Chechen) immigrants - they pose a huge threat to criminal situation in Moscow. I myself was almost attacked by a Caucasian person a couple of days ago. In suburbs of Moscow it's really dangerous to walk at nights, because they usually gather in large ethnic groups, often armed with knives or even firearms, and tend to fight with the local people. If a fight occurs between the Russian people and the Caucasian people in Moscow, even if it is provoked by the immigrants, the cops will always arrest the Russians blaming them for nationalism, while the Caucasian would be claimed victims of the 'skinheads'. These 'victims' rob and kill people, and rape women, but the officials don't really care. Moscow officials do welcome newcomers, and if one thinks that the capital of Russia is way overloaded with immigrants, he or she would be blamed for being 'not tolerant'.
I don't see anything good coming out of this.

Not sure that the Russian-puppet misogynist pseudo-theocracy that it already is is much better, to be honest!
Any word yet on whether this is a genuine terrorist attack or another false flag operation like the apartment bombings?
