It's not so much they want to rush out one as fast as they can. It just seems like they're trying to use a classic title because it already has a bit of a name and despite it seemingly being a completely different game than the original they still can call it a reboot.
I said this before, but it's like resident evil 4. It had similar elements from the older games and same characters but it was
not a resident evil game at all, and they probably just used the name because it would sell better. Honestly, they probably wont skimp on the game they'll just make it to fit the modern standard so it would be better in todays market, which is not really what I'm interested in.
Thing is, it's not an entirely different game, nor is it a complete reshuffle like Resident Evil 4 was. They didn't take what was a stealth game and turn it into a first person shooter, or a 3rd person platformer. You're still doing the same things in nuThief you did in Thief 1, 2 and even 3.
The biggest changes were to how it's played, the control scheme, rather than the core gameplay itself. Yeah, they're obviously leaning on more modern game trends, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. It all depends on how it's handled. If the levels are still complicated enough to offer multiple ways to complete an objective, if the AI is smart enough to present a solid, difficult challenge to the player, if there are still secrets everywhere waiting to be discovered, then the game is still basically the same as it was before, even if jumping has been replaced with straight up mantling, and leaping is done by running at a ledge.
Granted, I don't like everything I've seen. Preassigned rope arrow points kinda suck no matter you look at it, and the freedom of exploration can be curtailed completely if EM went a little too contextual with their controls. But right now, I'm not completely sure the game is going to suck, or be fairly decent. Everything I've seen points towards something that could go either way depending on how it's all implemented.
So no, nuThief isn't trying to be an RE4 style reboot. It's trying to be a New Thief. It's whether it succeeds at being a New Thief that's still a big question.
edit: if you want a good example of the best case scenario, compare Tomb Raider to Tomb Raider: Underworld. TR:U was more or less a reboot of the original series that still leveraged it's story and setting heavily, though with much smoother controls. And those smoother controls made the game much, much more elegant to play.
The worst case scenario would be comparing old Tomb Raider to the new Tomb Raider. It's a straight up RE4 style reboot through and through. And hell, it doesn't even have any tombs in it from what I hear.

Theres too much hinging on "If it does this this and this well" ontop of the fact it doesn't look like it will be something I'd like, which is why I'm waiting till it's really cheap to get. I honestly still think it'll do an average job on all it's thief aspects just going off the signs, the signs being their focuses being on things like leveling and contextual movement, the (on the surface seemingly) unoriginal story, the fact they don't really listen to their fans at all, and the upgrade system. None of these things condemn it to be shallow, they're just signs that show the focus is in different areas and therefor it's more likely to be an average job. Furthermore it seems like they take notes more from Deadly Shadows than any other thief, at least from what I've been reading.
I asked a few times on here and I don't think I got a solid answer, and this is a huge part of the original thief games that seemed to get overlooked: Noisy surfaces. The silent roll thing makes it seem like this might have gotten cut out to make room for it, and it never has been mentioned. This was a huge part of the thief games. This hinges on the "if it got axed" but if it did not only is that a huge part of thief cut out, but it also is another sign for a lack of complexity.

It doesn't appear to have been cut out. How extensive it is, I don't know though. Daniel Winfield Schmidt mentions different surfaces in this gameplay video at about 3:00 and 8:15:

oh, i didn't ask, is this the public scoring or the joint professional scores? I expect professional scores to be low, but not to bad... And public scores to be really low, 50/60% ish... People are going to hate the lack of controls and being forced to watch a poor B grade movie instead of experiencing a 'nextgen' game. I mean even just thinking about it - this game has no more advanced features than thief 1 or 2! Good graphics aren't enough to please gamers these days. It will isolate folk that want a new dishonored because it will be a far simpler game, and it will annoy the COD crowd if they can't just shoot to succeed, though possibly it will just not be bought by them in the first please. Those expecting Dues Ex HR will be astonished at the lack of depth or meaning in anything that they do/watch the magic zombie hands do and will decry how small the level and game is. Us olde tyme fans will just sit back secure in our knowledge that we have seen it all before... Way back when on the day gaming died (the first time, which is either deus ex 2 or thief 3, not the time when the gaming zombie was decapitated (dragon age 2).

It doesn't need advanced features, it's needs the core of Thief 1&2. It looks like it won't have that.

Lots of stuff + Tombraider
Ooh, I completely agree and disagree with you at the same time... But yeah - I see no reason why someone couldn't make a very excellent Thief game with very modern sensibilities.
I guess where I differ is I don't think the Tomb Raider reboot was embraced because it was quite a good game. I think it was well liked because it was quite a good game
and the TR brand had been so devalued that it hardly meant anything to anyone any more.
Maybe Deadly Shadows hasn't done Thief any favours, but I get the feeling that Thief still means a lot of things to seemingly quite a lot of people. If the Ford motor car company released a quite good very sensible hybrid family runabout and called it a Mustang, you'd probably get some grumpy car fans. Does it matter? Well, if there's something to the notion of '...to call each thing it's right name' then maybe it does.

Way back when on the day gaming died
A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that game used to make me smile
And I knew if I gave a taff
That Benny would make those people laugh
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every post ThiefGen delivered
Drivel on my desktop
I couldn't make this crap stop
I can't remember if I swore
At the outrage over Garrett's new actor
But something touched me deep inside
The day that gaming died

Because people mentioned him earlier in this thread...
Yahtzee finally got around to reviewing Dark Souls and there are several references to Thief, implying that he intends to play it and review it when it comes out. No surprise, given that the originals are among the few games he speaks fondly of.
Here's the Dark Souls review:
