Sideways bow firing has been in multiple games in the past (it's the default position for my Khajit when in stealth mode in Skyrim, for instance -- but she holds the bow vertically when standing) and has been used by many ancient cultures as well. It is

Different people have different preferences...So if NuGarrett wants to hold his bow differently from Garrett, that's his prerogative.

Exactly, it's not trying to be a medieval/steampunk/whatever version of ArmA, and neither were the classic games.
