The thing about Extreme is that they're one of the *very few* 80's bands that bears carrying on. On the surface, they looked like/were marketed like all the other 'hair' bands, but if you bothered to get the albums, it was a great mixture of Queen, P-funk, Van Halen, and Zepplin, with a hefty and intelligent socio-political lyric quality. Probably the most tell-tale sign of their diversity is on the track "When I First Kissed You" from Pornograffitti. They almost do early Sinatra better than Sinatra. Then you get other tracks like "Tragic Comic" and "Seven Sundays" from the III Sides album that are the furthest cry from hair metal. A very underrated band and songwriting team in all. More Than Words was good for exposure, but it was definitely their albatross. :(
Don't need to convinve me man, I have 3 of their albums! The big problem I had with them was their rhythm section left
alot to be desired at times. You can hear that those guys could play but quite often they would do the standard hair metal back beat type grooves, especially the bass player. The drummer did some great work when he broke it up like the extended instrumental riffage in "Cupids Dead". Cherones voice is good and at its best in stuff like "Tragic Comic" but sometimes I wish he would tone down the 'cock rock' a little in the harder songs.
Who is the drummer and bassist on the new album? Is it the original line up?
And yeah Collective Soul were a bit meh. Had some great riffs and a couple of cool solos ("Bleed" being a particular favourite of mine) but the songs never really came together for me.

I like these guys much better than either of those two

the thing with Extreme is their stuff just seems too calculated, technically excellent etc etc, but just lacking that 'x factor'.

While I can somewhat agree with regards to the other members, I think Nuno has the 'X factor' in spades.

also, I think my use of the term 'x factor' was fairly undefined

Pat Badger on bass still. Not sure who the new drummer is, but it's not Greary b/c he's managing, and Mike (from the Punchline album) isn't with them anymore.
I saw them on the punchline tour, and to this day, I say they're still the tightest band I've ever seen live. Probably also the most entertaining. Cherone isn't exactly my cup of tea vocally, but he's a great frontman - he was pretty insane that night, almost dangerously so (standing on top of the speaker stacks and rocking them back and forth, hanging from the light trusses, etc.) - and his pitch and delivery was dead on the whole time. No studio magic for any of those guys.
The 'x' factor for me was the concept albums - especially III Sides To Every Story. They had a very classic-prog approach to the way they built the music - tying everything in (both lyrically and musically) in the last act. There's a great depth to their stuff that casual fans really miss (much like the aforementioned Queen).

But doesn't it seem like Collective Soul can't come up with a good chorus to save their lives?
Yes... except for Shine. Although Collective Soul was never about the choruses.
They were always about the monster riffs.

How do you compare the two?
Impossible on expert @ Guitar Hero 3.

But fun. The Dragon Force track on the GH3 is by far the best though. By far.
