...who by the way has a new album coming out in March. :thumb: Nuno will kill you all so shut the fuck up with the more than words jokes.
Yeah I heard about that and I'm looking forward too it. I was quite disappointed with how Satellite Party turned out. The early live performances from Lollapalooza were fantastic, a funkier, dancier but still hard rockin Jane's Addictionesque band with Nuno's great licks and chord progressions. Say what you will about 'More Than Words', there are some killer chord changes in it not to mention the great harmonies. If only the arrangement wasn't so sappy.
The Satillet Party album however lost
alot of the rock and Nuno's solos seemed to have been 'dumbed' down into mostly pentatonic stuff. No crazy tapping runs, string skippin or quirky chromaticisms. I have my fingers crossed that this was more Perry Farrel's doing than Nuno not being into that stuff anymore. Roll on March!:thumb:

After that "party video" surfaced, I thought they were finished.

The thing about Extreme is that they're one of the *very few* 80's bands that bears carrying on. On the surface, they looked like/were marketed like all the other 'hair' bands, but if you bothered to get the albums, it was a great mixture of Queen, P-funk, Van Halen, and Zepplin, with a hefty and intelligent socio-political lyric quality. Probably the most tell-tale sign of their diversity is on the track "When I First Kissed You" from Pornograffitti. They almost do early Sinatra better than Sinatra. Then you get other tracks like "Tragic Comic" and "Seven Sundays" from the III Sides album that are the furthest cry from hair metal. A very underrated band and songwriting team in all. More Than Words was good for exposure, but it was definitely their albatross. :(

fett, i can't believe i'm admitting what i'm about to say, but it is in line with what you mention.
Collective Soul.
Now, mind you, i wouldn't take one of their albums if you gave me a bottle of whiskey and a wad of hundred dollar bills (well, yes i would). Anyways, the point remains.
However, in college i interned one summer for what used to be Audionet (they turned into Broadcast.com and then were bought by Yahoo) which was one of the first online music ventures out there (i think this was 1996 or 1997, can't remember). As a result, i had backstage access to some decent shows and some not so decent. One of the so-so shows was the Blockbuster Rockfest - this schmorgasboard of bands that included all kinds of stuff... most of which i hated (think Bush and the like). Anyways, midway though Saturday afternoon Collective Soul was up. i am not kidding when i say that they played an absolutely fantastic show. i never admitted it, but i was very impressed. Their sound was incredibly tight and they did a bunch of impromptu stuff that i was amazed by. i kept thinking, "If this was on their albums, they would have a much broader appeal."
Anyways, i will never mention this outside of this post, but there you have it.

Collective Soul had some good music back in the day; I remember I really liked their blue album, and a few tracks off Disciplined Breakdown. I used to buy all their stuff, and I've seen them a few times (they are good live) but once they started to abandon the guitars in favour more adult-contemporary sounding electronics I lost interest. I've been listening to them a bit recently and they still kinda rock, or maybe it's just nostalgia.

Metallica or Megadeth huh?....
Thats a hard decision.. Mustaine or Hetfield ....
my answer would have to be MetallicA

But doesn't it seem like Collective Soul can't come up with a good chorus to save their lives? The guitar riffs stick in your head for years, but for the life of me, I can't remember any of the choruses. It's like this great build-up that should burst into a huge hooky monster, but then it just goes flaccid - repeat process. I do like the guitar player a lot, though the rest of the band (particularly the vocalist) is just meh. I'm probably jaded - I was in a cover band for years that played December and World I Know until I just. wanted. to. puke. You'd be amazed how many people request their songs.
