So, I was curious and poking around and came across this: (
https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/all/filtered) https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/all/filtered. As I've been in and around video games for over 35 years, have to say that I would agree with NONE of the top 10 listed. Tony Hawk at number 2...really? While I like some of the ones listed, I certainly would put them as a top ten item. Perhaps this is one reason why I keep coming back to this forum... It goes without saying, that T1 should be in the first slot. Thoughts?

It's a pretty good representation of mainstream Western tastes -- action games, platformers, open world games, sports games. It's a small wonder Disco Elysium is as high on the list as it is. More niche genres like stealth are inevitably going to take a backseat to that and you're not going to find the likes of The Secret of Monkey Island or Silent Hill anywhere near the top on there.

I have no problem with Tony Hawk 2 or 3 being on that list. They were phenomenal games. Of course, this is just 'games ranked by metacritic score' and metacritic score is almost entirely useless.

The chapter I just read in my neuroscience book was all about the difference between your actual feeling or perception of the value of a thing and your report of the value of a thing when somebody prompts you, which can often be very different. And there can also be a difference between the overall feeling of its value vs. a critical opinion if a person sat down and thought about it for a while and came up with a long list of pros and cons and added it all up.
A metacritic score is representing a really narrow case where a reviewer is punching in a numerical score that has all kinds of psychological pressures going into it. I think it means a lot more to a marketing department wanting to get people to pull the trigger and buy a game than the kinds of debates the BAFTA committee for their Games Award would have. Edit: I say that, but then I looked at the kinds of games that win BAFTA awards, and it's not too different from the Metacritic list. So ... what do I know?

Remember New Vegas.. Didn't Metacritic become the laughing stock of the games industry after the New Vegas scandal?
These lists are always pointless, but still I'm happy to not see Journey and Dad of Boy high in this list, there is still some hope for humanity?

I remember when it came out, my friends and I played a whole lot of it between whatever stupid teenager stuff we were also up to. It's an easier game to play sociably so maybe that's why it has greater reach.

Indeed surprising to see THPS2 so high up. I mean I liked it, but I never realized it was so universally acclaimed by critics.

I've never played the Tony Hawk games, but critics are absolutely head over heels for them. Here's the Errant Signal series gushing about it and even Super Bunnyhop joins in in the comments:

Not only that, the filtering is treating releases for different platforms as separate games, so GTA4 features twice in the top 10 and GTA5 features five times in the top 25. There are only 75 titles in that top 100! And even if you think metacritic scores are a good basis, there are
so many games that personal preference is going to significantly outweigh the small differences in aggregated scores; so while it's true that the first hundred or so entries have scores that stand out in relative terms, I'm sure that most people would find their personal favourites scattered far and wide.
001-100 covers scores of 99-94
101-200 covers scores of 94-92
201-300 covers scores of 92-91
301-400 covers scores of 91-90
401-500 covers scores of 90
501-600 covers scores of 90-89
601-700 covers scores of 89
701-800 covers scores of 89-88
801-900 covers scores of 88
901-1000 covers scores of 88-87

As an indie dev paying attention to the industry, all I am going to say is: the amount of metacritic scores is correlated with the game's success much, much more than the actual score.
at least in indie space. don't pay attention to triple-A as much.
