Who mentioned the USA, knobchew?
Kolya on 10/12/2009 at 16:11
I'm sorry, I just assumed you were living in the US.

I think that pointing out that just because she has been found guilty doesn't mean she IS guilty (and you can quote from any number of cases of false imprisonment in recent years, for the Brits you might like to remind them about the Guildford 4) is almost EXACTLY the issue.
I think you're confused over the order of events. The judges don't give their discussion/opinion till AFTER the closing arguments are made. I AM NOT ALLOWED to interrupt the judicial process or in any way defend myself. Silence is mandatory.
If your argument is FUCK THE CLASS RULES, this is all fun and good but I'd rather not be kicked out after putting so much effort into it.
And yes, Kolya, I'm an American (Seattlite currently spending most of my days in western Massachusetts.)
SubJeff on 10/12/2009 at 19:21
But you're an American living in the UK, where I am, atm.
If you feel you put so much effort into the whole thing I don't get how you don't feel strongly about not making sure it's not a waste of time. You don't have to break class "rules", but after it was over you could have said something. I would be pretty annoyed if I put a lot of effort into something only for the other participants to act like idiots essentially meaning my effort was for naught.

But was there no discussion of the verdict after it was made? There's no real risk of 'lessening the educational value of the exercise' if the educational value is zero because you're not discussing the mock trial after it's done.
And I know that you said this isn't a law class, but that the professor apparently didn't lay out some basic standards of judicial objectivity (and competence, based on judge A and B) shows pretty clearly that this wasn't an exercise he should've been running in the first place.

1. I don't know. It's pretty odd isn't it? People sometimes act really oddly when freaked out though.
2. Because I hate solid potential that turns into something pathetic, which is precisely why I don't like you.
