Okay to cut a long story short I have a dedicated 512mb graphics card and 3gb of RAM. Nothing wrong with that, or so I thought, until I looked at the system details.
Dedicated Video Memory: 512MB
Shared Video System Memory: 1278MB
Total Video Memory: 1790MB
What? Does that mean that my system only has access to 1794MB of memory? How do I let the system have full access to the 3GB avaliable?
Or does it mean that, if required, the computer will allow the graphics card to use 1278mb of memory but otherwise the system can use it anyway?
Is this something the graphics card does or is it a Vista thing, or something else?

It's a function of your operating system (VISTA) mostly and the MOBO.
Run DXDIAG and see what that tells you.

Basically YES!
