Good idea. I think these threads work best in combination with smart modding.

If we're sticking with this thread instead of periodically making a new one, can we go all the way and merge it with the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122469) first one? If there's no technical limitation then why limit ourselves! Embrace the mega!

Why not just squash the whole forum into one megathread? Everything in chronological order. One big reverberating aluminium hangar of whispers.

I've moved the recent posts about TTLG and megathreads from (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136785) this thread so we can stop the discussion being inconsiderately interrupted by people wanting to post about what they're playing.

I realise this was flippant but there are certainly other places on the internet where you can get exactly that. It obviously loses the ability to easily return to a subject matter a few months (days? hours?) after the fact and build on a discussion that was started and for it still to remain coherent. A lot of the subject matter that we have is slow moving, particularly where games are discussed during development up to being released and played by members. Having that discussion buried within a megathread loses the continuity of discussion.
Overall, my view is that megathreads do have a place. However, they should be primarily about the
person rather than the subject matter. i.e. they're great for hearing quick snippets of what's being played (or watched) and the opinions of the person involved. If the discussion a game / video / TV program is more in-depth then it's best suited to its own thread -
particularly where there's a forum already set up for the game!.
One option to the ever-growing threads would be to split the ones that have a lot of activity into yearly threads (going forward) similar to the youtube thread. It would at least keep the latest discussions relevant for someone wanting to go through the entire thread without being confronted by years of posts. That would fit into the new thread for "what are you playing" that Sulphur created - but would at least align with a sensible time of year that would be consistent.

While it's a good discussion to have, I think we also need to move towards a concrete outcome - either have megathreads without a limit, or cap them at a set amount of pages, or move them to a yearly chronicletacular blog 'zine.
What's not going to be a popular decision is cracking down on having megathreads at all, because it's fairly evident people like having the comfort of a big old thread to jaw on about random things, just like if we had a face-to-face communal get-together, we'd all end up free-associating into different threads of dialogue.

I agree. I hadn't finished setting up this thread (and my post) when you posted so see above for my thoughts. Ultimately it's a decision for all members and nothing will be arbitrarily imposed.

Quick cross-post (of sorts) from the "Now what are you playing?" thread:
While I like megathreads, I do think that they should be kept from hoovering up all the conversations that have specific places, i.e. if there's enough discussion on a particular topic, make a specific thread. If there's already such a specific thread, point people in the direction of that thread and, if necessary, mod-move the conversation there.
This means more work for the moderators, but from what I've seen on other forums it's worth it. As I've said before, IMO megathreads shouldn't replace specific threads, they should complement them, because it's a different kind of conversation. I'd very much agree with you guys in that respect.
Edit: This is in response to the Fallout 4 discussion going on in the "Now what are you playing?" thread.

Seconded. In some cases, if a conversation just starts up and has enough momentum to BECOME a thread, I suggest the mods splice it out, because it's otherwise hard for it to happen after the fact.

Agree on the points brought up, mentioning in the NWAYP? thread that you're playing Fallout 4 (or other titles with seperate threads/fora) should be ok if it's limited to something like "I'm also playing Fallout 4 and I like it." and not much more. Starting to go into details about something you experienced in a game is only apropriate if the game in question has no established thread or forum.
