Mega Man 2.5D is a thing that has been in development for 8 years and is now finished and available - for free - for your gaming pleasure. Download it (
http://petersjostrand.com/) right here! Or don't. Whatevs! I'm gonna check it out at least. LATER, DUDES!

I suddenly remember why I've never really gotten into the Mega Man games. I am terrible at them. Used up all my lives and died on my first attempt at the Pharaoh Man stage. And then the game crashed. I'm not even sure if it was a bug or just the game's way of letting me know I'm not cut out for this.

Back in the day when the Mega Mans were at their height of power and popularity, kids didn't have all these whizz-bang downloadable contents and digital storefronts and shit. We got 2 games a year if we were lucky, and you played the shit out of those two games until you got gud, then you played them again and again and again until you got a new game 6 months later.
That's why games like Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 could be vague as fuck, and still be well regarded today. Back then, you didn't have a list of games as long as your forearm to play in lieu of the crappy ones. You just played them over and over and over again until you figured everything out through raw bloodymindedness. And we liked it that way! WE LOVED IT!

Um, yeah, I know. I was there.
Aren't Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 considered the weakest entries in their series though? Aside from stuff like those Phillips CDi Zelda games, I mean.

Yeah, but they're still well loved anyway. They're only really considered bad when viewed in retrospect.
Though I wouldn't put any of the early Mega Mans on that list. They're all awesome games, well designed. Just hard as crap.

I don't remember Castlevania 2 being outright bad at the time, but it was somewhat of a disappointment compared to the first game. Though, I can't really compare them on the account of never finishing Castlevania 2 as I lacked the required clairvoyance to decipher the WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO BE STUCK WITHOUT HINTS.

I played CV2 before the first, so I'm of the opposite opinion. I thought exploring the countryside, beating up wolves to get hearts so I could buy crystals was the bee's freaking knee.
Though if it weren't for Nintendo Power, I doubt any of us would've beat that game. Deborah's Cliff, man. Never forget.

Castlevania II could have used with a FAR better translation than the one we had at the time. It's certainly not a bad game, imho, and lays the foundation for Symphony of the Night, which is still on my top 3 Castlevania games. I still prefer the first game over II, tho'.
BUT if we're going for the NES era, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is my poison. Aw yisss...multiple paths to choose from. Great level variety & ddesign. Awesome graphics. Killer 8-bit soundtrack. Epic bosses. Not to mention, the first in the series that lets you play as different characters with unique abilities! (Grant Dynasty's climbing skill FTW!)
Then came Super Castlevania IV and HOLY SHIT, MY PANTS WERE ON FIRE! But that's the SNES era, and a whole 'nother story....woooo!

As for Mega Man, gotta love dat blue bomber...
Played and finished classic MM from 1 to 6 for the NES, I can never recall if I played 7 for the SNES. Played and finished 8 for the PS1. Played and finished MM 9 and 10 for the Virtual Console on the Wii. Great jolly times. I think the ones I enjoyed the least were 6 and 5, methinks. By 6 it really showed that the guys at CAPCOM needed a break from the franchise. 9 was, imho, an awesome return to the classic style.
And, unlike many, I do still enjoy MM 1...though, yeah, I'm a sucker for 2 and 3.
Ah, great times.
And yeah, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was an interesting departure from what the rest of the franchise has done since (mostly keep the original/ALttP template, not a bad thing, methinks), but it certainly could be, like with Castlevania 2, a bit of a guessing game what to do and where to go (again, with a minimal/shitty translation). Some of those sections could be punishing for sure...oic. I did manage to finish it, but I'll be honest, as with Castlevania II, I used guides, and I am not ashamed to admit it, I still needed tons of skill.
PS. henkster - If you -really- ever want to suffer real, hardcore NES-hard, play the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy for the NES. That's a kick in the nuts with a set of rusty nails. Great games (at least the first two), but they do dip far into bullshit-unfair territory difficulty in some of the later levels (I'm looking at you, 6-3, Ninja Gaiden 1!!!!).

In the case of Castlevania you have only to look at Castlevania 64 and it's sequel for that.

I think TriForce Heroes wasn't well received neither.
