I'm thinking of getting a media server; at the moment I'm using my PC as such whenever there's something I want to stream, but it's a bit silly that I need to have the computer on all the time. Having an external storage device that's shared equally by all the machines in our household sounds like the better option to me.
Any experiences with such media servers? Any specific devices you can recommend? Or would you suggest something else altogether?

Ok well the actual name for the device you want is called a NAS (network area storage) box. Typically it will have a 1 or more harddrives, and most NAS boxes have a media server of some sort on them. But for the most part you wont need that, as your computer will just see it has a share on the network with music/video/pictures on and stream the media from there.
Now the big question is what is your budget..?

Hmm. I'd say anything up to USD250. I don't need lots and lots of TBs - two to three would be enough.
Would a regular NAS be accessible to a PS3 in the network?

* OK, let me have a look
* And yes any device that can access the network will be able to access the nas box.

Here is a good 2x bay proper NAS box and this is something I would use/recommend as you can mirror one drive to the other in case of drive failure or data corruption.
BUFFALO LS-WX2.0TL/R1 $199 and come with 2x 1TB drives - (

If you want to go for a single drive option (which I dont recommend for the reason stated above)
BUFFALO LS-X1.0TL 1TB (

Now this was a very quick search, dont take my word etc. Do some research, find out which boxes perform better for small file over the network etc.
