This guy's largely invented persona has really broken some kind of third wall. I don't watch the show but I've got to tip my hat to that.

Technically, a fourth wall is "some kind" of third wall. Unless it is made of brick and the previous was merely stucco. In which case, it is still a kind of wall.

Its not largly invented, its totally invented. Its his actual name but the stephen colbert we know is a character to him (heard a interview with him on npr about it). His real thoughts bleed through but his entire act is total satire, just in case anyone wondered.
Although he is a real practicing catholic.
