The film (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065224) Wonderwall (1968) is mainly know for its soundtrack by George Harrison. It's about a biologist who spends his lifetime peering through a microscope until a girl named Penny Lane (Jane Birkin) moves in next to his apartment. He discovers a hole through which he can observe her fantastic world of sex, drugs and psychedelia. He begins drilling more holes into this wonderwall, becoming completely engrossed in it.

Interesting, although I'm not sure it makes the song make more sense.

It might be written from a rock fan perspective. The relationship between fans and rock stars iswas in some ways similar to that of voyeurs and their subjects. From the 60s through the 90s you were watching rock stars through the peep holes the press drilled into the wonderwall. And there was an expectation cast upon rock stars, not just to put on the familiar sex & drugs & rock'n'roll show, but also to save a listener - on a very individual, spiritual level - through their music. A mixed feeling of transcendence and the pseudo social relationship one can develop with their rock star, described through a Christian metaphor. Can music save your mortal soul? as Don McLean asked.
The next song on the same album ("Don't look back in anger") gives their reply to that: Please don't put your life in the hands of a Rock 'n' Roll band who'll throw it all away.

Maybe (ha), I'd just been cynical and thought Noel Ghallager was good at putting together phrases that sounded meaningful. Not that it isn't common in popular music of course...
