abstinence itself, which, humans being humans, is impossible to achieve
You are impossible to achieve.

Consistent use of condoms reduces the chance of HIV transmission by about 90%, yeah. Bearing in mind that the chance of getting HIV even from unprotected sex is already very small, then you're basically talking about stopping the disease dead in its tracks.
This.
Scots:
While I understand your frustration with those preaching condoms as the cure-all, you aren't going to win this one. Condoms aren't 100% effective, true, but damn close if used correctly, and the Pope's statement that they can "increase the problem" is a destructive lie (and you hinging your argument on his usage of the word "can" is doing you no favors).
Monogamy and abstinence may be the only prevention against STDs that is 100% effective, but so what? Any approach that focuses primarily on that angle is going to fail miserably as the reality is we're human and we like to fuck.

The thing is that the RCC and many others use the discussion about a terrible disease to impose their moral judgement on others. It's the same thing all over that we had back in the 80s/early 90s when AIDS was a faggot disease rightfully deserved by those who fuck men in the ass.
A-men.

Even this is not true.
If we're picking at infinitesimal percentages consider that I could be 100% faithful to my wife, but get an infected blood transfusion, contract HIV, pass it on to her, and die.
She remarries, passes it on to her new spouse, new children, etc.
We've all been faithful and monogamous, but things can still happen.
That's why Scots is absolutely wrong on this. Preaching abstinence as a tool is fine, but it needs to be used in conjunction with as many other tools as you can get your hands on(lol).

Yeah, while a lot of these are imperfect solutions, in the west we didn't virtually halt the spread of the incurable disease with all of our abstinence and monogamy.
From one of the many articles discussing this:
Quote Posted by Lisa Power of the Aids charity The Terrence Higgins Trust
Both abstinence and condoms are valid weapons in the fight against HIV, but unfortunately abstinence has a far higher failure rate.
