Shouldn't the

not stupid and
not unrealistic?
Methinks you're being way too kind on the RCC here. They continue to champion an unworkable "solution" that has already led to the deaths of millions of people. Their pushing of abstinence-only policies is religious dogma masquerading as health advice.
And remember, they're not just telling people that condoms aren't an effective method of protecting against HIV, which is a dangerous enough lie in itself - they're (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7014335.stm) actively claiming that condoms are deliberately infected with the disease.

Yeah, well that's just fucked. And bear in mind, I'm not giving them leeway on their (my words) retarded view of the situation, merely that the media loves to misrepresent them at any given opportunity - not that it's hard, the RCC has needed two things badly over the last decade or so: a PR advisor and an ex-Catholic advisor who still respects the faith enough to tell it like it is without needlessly trashing the fuck out of them to review doctrine and dogma.

If the pope has to be anyone from Star Wars in this context, I'm afraid the only logical choice would be Solo.

It's also stupid and unrealistic that people are going to use condoms effectively and consistently. During typical condom use in a year, 15% of women will still get pregnant. Consider that a typical woman cannot become pregnant 85% of the year, but can become infected with and STD 100% of the year. Perfect use is better, but rarely achieved. Also consider that many people would do worse than even typical use. Condoms are the only technology for now to try to prevent contracting HIV, but it fails. It's way better than nothing, but it won't prevent HIV. Condoms are also just terrible. Many people regardless of knowing better will not use them. Add to that so many having sex on drugs or drunk, or those times where they play the STD lottery and decide to "wing it". Many men choose to pay prostitutes more money to allow them to not use a condom. Abstinence and faithfulness is not something the majority of the world will ever choose, nor is perfect and consistent use of condoms. Aids will continue to spread. Praying real hard won't make HIV go away, nor will condoms, but on an individual basis, each person has to make their own decisions and live with potential risks and consequences of their decisions. I'm not Catholic, but swearing at someone preaching abstinence won't prevent anyone from getting HIV any better than praying.

Yeah, exactly. It fucking irks me when people talk about condoms like the panacea some believe it is.
Beleg Cúthalion on 19/3/2009 at 12:05
Plus, don't they have this "many children mean wealth and safety" thing still going strong? AFAIK you cannot make children with condoms. One more reason for general abstinence. :p

Yes, condoms can prevent the spread of AIDS.
However, it's unlikely to contain it to any meaningful degree if promiscuity and infidelity remain the dominant social factors.
I'm glad you're up to the task of protecting the RCC from malicious misrepresentation. Because clearly they're the ones in need of protection (lol) here.
While those African half-primates should just stop fucking around like monkeys and learn some culture - problem solved!
Awesome Scots, just awesome.

Well, if everyone used condoms properly, then HIV wouldn't spread.
If everyone was faithful to one married partner only, then HIV wouldn't spread.
But, isn't an approach that tries to use both going to work better? Rubbishing the other method of prevention and saying to use yours instead isn't very helpful.
What needs to be done is people using both!

The thing is that the RCC and many others use the discussion about a terrible disease to impose their moral judgement on others. It's the same thing all over that we had back in the 80s/early 90s when AIDS was a faggot disease rightfully deserved by those who fuck men in the ass.
