If your major skills are maxed out and youre unable to level up, go to jail. You'll lose skill points and be able to gain them back for more levels. This isn't foolproof but if you're desperate it works. If you're lucky you might even gain a point in a thief skill. (Anyone else have this happen to them?)

Wouldn't another option be to buy some training in one of your minor or misc. skills until you level up? More expensive than spending the night in the joint, but (IMHO) there's no way that you can fully enjoy all the functionality of your character with only the 5 major skills you chose at the beginning.

You won't level up on miscellaneous skills, but there are ways to make a skill still be able to increase after they reach 100 - particularly combat skills.
If you create a Bound Weapon spell, set the duration to 0, for some reason there is a bug that permanently enhances your skill with the weapon type (the automatic fortify type) - after it surpasses 100, it allegedly will continue to increase. Without realizing, I had over 500 in Short Blade, and when I went out to test it, I noticed it still rose, and fairly easily too.
Look like you get screwed if you buy your major skills.
Every time one of your minor or major skills go up by one it caries over into the levels meter. When the meter reaches 100 you go up a level.
If you buy training in a skill it doesn't move the level meter. So if you were to buy all your skills you would not level up as much as a person who did it the hard way.
Does this make sence ???

Fizz - Actually, you can level up by buying majors and minors. 10 increases in any combination of major or minor skills will level you up, whether they are purchased through training, read in books, or used in action.

Are you sure?
You know how the slider in the level menu goes up everytime you increase a skill. I never saw it slide up when I picked up a skill point by training. Maybe I missed it ?

I can confirm that buying training in a major or minor skill will count towards leveling up. I've leveled up a couple times by training the 10th skill point. Miscellaneous skills, however, have no effect on leveling.

Fizz - It doesn't change the level slider for the skill (it instead simply raises it 1 complete level) but it does count towards the experience level of the character (when you raise 10 major or minor skills in any way, you gain 1 experience level). I will bump up a post I made which I hope has information that is helpful regarding levelling/skills and stats.
