I heard Matt Groening is leaving the Simpsons with a severance of $10 million. Someone said he didn't like where the Simpsons is going, that it's getting too crude for him. Huh?
Oh yeah, and I heard that the series is ending after the movie comes out, but I heard that awhile ago. I love the Simpsons, but it wouldn't be THAT bad...most people would aggree the for awhile the series has become soggy and dull.
What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that every great TV series reaches a point where enough is enough, and that The Simpsons is no exception. And that despite the flak it's copped for over recent years (mainly from people who were gleefully waiting for the cracks to appear) it's delivered consistent quality over a period of time that few other shows could even get close to.
Oh, and also that the (

If he leaves the Simpsons to make more Futurama then fair enough!
Seriously though, it could be a possibilty. Futurama has made a comeback, the first movie is complete and with three more to make he is mabey decided that the simpsons has run its course and time to move on.

3 more to make? Four Futarama movies? What?
Simpsons never did much for me, though I don't really have anything against them. Futurama is charming and I admire it but I rarely found it funny (though it did have its great episodes). I think his best stuff is still Life in Hell, though the modern ones I've seen aren't so hot.
WHEN WILL THEY RELEASE A LIFE IN HELL COLLECTION instead of this piecemeal bullshit. They just released a compilation that was just Will & Abe stories from OTHER compilations. It's bullshit.

Different tastes I guess, I find it hilarious. Then again, the show was made by geeks, so I suppose I'm the crowd they cater to. ;)

I haven't watched much recent Simpsons, but when I do, I'm struck by how it seems to be leaning slightly towards a Family Guy style format and less like the Simpsons of old. Ironic.
More Futurama would be fantastic.

While The Simpsons is quite easily the funniest animation series of all time and has had an enviable run that is now denegrating into mediocrity and with a movie coming will hopefully end its run on a high note, Futurama had perhaps the most touching episode of all time: Jurrassic Bark. Never before have I felt choked up at a cartoon show, that is an amazing achievement. On the other hand, Futurama's quality could be topsy-turvy, some episodes just completely missed the mark and tried to be action-adventurey which I simply found dull while others were as good as the best Simpsons episodes.

But Groening is the heart and soul of the Simpons. Fox would be stupid to try and continue it without him overseeing the scripts. His decreasing involvement is what has led to the last few lackluster seasons IMO. Still better than most anything on TV these days though...

The Simpsons started to go downhill several years ago, well, I lost interest in it several years ago. Bart should be nearly 30 by now anyway...
For me at least, Futurama surpasses the Simpsons by a fair way, but maybe that's just because it was moving on where the Simpsons was stagnating after about 8 or 9 seasons.

I have to say that I laugh at Futurama a lot more. How do you declare something the funniest animated series of all time? Can we figure out how many people laughed at it and how much? Can we measure the joke density?
Also, I'm fairly glad that Futurama didn't keep going for too long and have time to become dull. In my view that is the fate of the Simpsons, and Groening probably wants to do something else. He certainly doesn't need the money anymore.
