Howdy. I don't have much more to add to the title. I thought it seemed associated with Flash ads, but it's not all of them. If it was Flash, I don't know why some would do it and others wouldn't (Flash websites aren't a problem).
Currently it's every other blog and newspaper website, but not consistently (which again points me to the ads)
If anyone's got any pointers on figuring out what's doing it or why, I'd be grateful. Should I block ads, turn off java, black flash somehow? Any other possibilities?
cheers

Is this a common issue (sites crash everyone's firefox) or specific to you (sites crash my firefox)?
To further diagnose:
Create a new profile with Firefox. (Run > c:\...\firefox\firefox.exe -profilemanager) Access sites with the new Firefox, see if it crashes.
Download Firefox Portable ((
http://gog.is/firefox/portable)), re-test sites.

I'm pretty sure it's just me. The crashing is so widespread, internet howling about it would be fairly easy to find (not that I've looked all that hard).
I'll give those a try. Cheers

Ads? In Firefox?
Why aren't you using AdBlockPlus?

Adblock's great :D
It's also quite versatile - you can block avatars you don't like, or background images in webpages which make the text too hard to read.

Btw Muz, you never said what version of FF you are using..

Cheers gang. After getting a bit systematic about it, it seems turning of AVG's link/site checking feature all but eliminated the problem (I don't know what that thing really does. Surely the half dozen other things watching for viruses and trojans would catch anything a link or an ad might drop. But I dunno).
On the subject of ad blockers; I don't use one because quite a few sites I visit ask people not to so they get more of that sweet sweet Googlechange and whatever else. I really don't know how it all works. It can't be very much, but I guess it all adds up.

I leave the text-only ads alone, but (animated) banner ads must die a slow and painful death, only after great pain.

If you're concerned about ad revenue for sites you visit, AdBlock for Firefox may offer some whitelisting. Since I don't use it, I don't know. However, Opera definitely does have built-in blacklisting and whitelisting for scripts and ads based on domain.
