By 'stick' I take it you mean a vehicle with manual transmission?
Jeez, I thought it was an (admittedly slightly odd) joke that in reality there wasn't any kind of car available, but there
was a nice big stick handy if you knew how to fight with one! :)
I guess I'm still focussed on the subject of the thread (plus I've never heard anyone call a manual a "stick" in my life :)

You obviously live in a city. "Stick Shift" has been the name for a manual transmission shift lever since the 20's.
The early ones were a lever sticking up out of the floor, then came the steering column shifter, then the floor mount Auto, but most trucks and semi's still come with a "Stick Shift" if you want.
Some sportscars and wannabe sports cars come with a floor shift "stick".

If you prefer: TRANSMISSION HOUSING.
The newer vehicles have a console. The older ones have a HUMP where the transmission passes under the passenger compartment.
It was then, and in many cases still is a: floor. Complete with RUG. :D

Oh I've certainly heard "stick shift" before, and if that phrase had been used I would have understood. However, here cars are either "manual" or "automatic", and a "stick" is a wooden thing from a tree.

"Stick" and "Slush" are common terms in this area for the Manual and Automatic.
The "SHIFT" part is added seldom, if ever.
I was teasing about the "CITY". But most country folk do have a familiarity with "stick" as a tranmission as well as a party mixer and child trainer. :)

Being a pup myself, I guess your scope of old and new is much wider than mine. Consoles have been the more common option in most cars, sport or not, since the 80s, a decade which I don't really consider to be recent anymore. It was hard letting go, but I finally had to accept the fact the the 80s have officially gone retro and even the god-forsaken 90s are now old hat. Also, weren't there plenty of cars in the 60s and 70s with consoles? Surely you're not such a grizzled ancient that you consider the 60s to still be "new." ;)

Well I'm just glad you didn't also start talking about Slush, then, or I would have been questioning which thread I was reading entirely!
Vernacular vs Teh Internet. Always a confusing match-up :)

The console thing began around the 70's I think. Mostly on luxury cars and some muscle cars. But these were the good ol' times of benches where you could make out with the girlfriend without running the added risk of shafting yourself in the ass with the console stick.
