I originally had Darkside in Shalesbridge. Threre was a ref to "a Darkside whorekeep" somewhere, forget exactly. So I was just wondering where the red light district would be - obviously it would be by the Docks! I realise that it might not be intended to be a actual area, like the undermarket, but it seems to fit ok.
Fairly sure it was 'Dockside', not Darkside - seeing as how there are always dockside whorekeeps...;). Would also tie into this conversation:
Quote:
sg1c2601 - I can't believe how bad Wayside's got; guy tried to rob me, broad daylight, just the other day.
Sg2c2602 - Why'd you be goin' down to Wayside, anyway? Nuttin' there but whores and moneymongers!
sg1c2603 - Hey, my sister lives down that way!
Sg2c2604 - Bet I know which sort she is!
But still, it's in the right place.
I've always thought that Undermarket was just the term they use for shady dealings, Warden-controlled black market stuff - hence the conversation about Raputo turning in DeWall:
Quote:
Sg3c1701 - Hey! You remember when the Baron's police took down DeWall?
Sg2c1702 - Yeah, of course! Had a buddy in the group who was blockin' the back alley!
Sg3c1703 - I hear it was Raputo what turned him over.
Sg2c1704 - Another Undermarket Warden? That's slick!
'Specially since the DeWall/The Wall confusion was cleared up...;).
Quote:
Notice that there are grey areas around the main quarters? This will provide room for new quarters and districts not mentioned in the canon ... in this way the City can grow.
I did notice 'em, and thought that might be what you were doing. Another stroke of brilliance, if you ask me... the City stretches beyond those aspects we touched on in the Original Games. Much like Lankhmar, it's good to have room to move, expand, and play around with the City.
We've also got the surrounding fishing, farming and mining concerns that spread out from the City, feeding it's everlasting hunger... it's a voracious thing, it is.

Darkside is from Life of the Party, the arguing archers:
Quote:
RG: Haha you're lady? an angel? You're lucky the Darkside whore keep isn't knocking down your lady's door for stealing their clientele. Why just last week I saw her out back, warming up the stable boy.

That's what I meant, that Darkside could be a term applied to prostitution related activities, rather than an area. Reading the quote again, though, it might just be the name of a local brothel??

I also think it's dockside.
Lady van Vernon meets Lady Mondegreen ;).

Rob, welcome back! ... yes, there are similarities of course, as a scenario B map, it would be bound to I guess, just like Greeny's. We were waiting for you to update it, and you never did :( What happened?
I'd be interested to hear if the new B maps have changed anyone's mind as to which layout they prefer?

Hello, long time reader, first time poster. I just had a comment to make. I am sorry if this has already been discussed, but I have not read all the pages in this thread. In fact I have only read the last few. In the Thief mission, "Assassins" there is a readable that says "Raputo Warden of North Quarter, Shalebridge, Newmarket, New Quarter". Isn't Shalebridge too far down in the map posted by str8g8? I would assume Raputo would be warden of districts which are right next to each other. I know that there has been a lot of discussion about the location of Shalebridge, and I'm sorry if I am repeating what has already been said, but I just thought I'd comment.

Yes, that is one of the problems of Scenario B. Scenario A, (see map posted earlier) has Raputo's areas as a nice contiguous chunk, but breaks the link between the Cradle and Shalebridge... :erg:
Anyone know where to get a nice set of readables, the (
http://thief.webz.cz/) Thief 1 and 2 Index seems a bit flaky at the moment, not linking to the Framed stuff properly and so on...

Interesting question. In rebuttal, WHY would you assume that he's got a contiguous territory? The wardens seem to have an uneasy truce - they're competing mafia bosses, if you will, not members of Ye Olde Criminal Union (AKA Generic Fantasy Thieves' Guild 101). They're
organized crime.
So it could be that Raputo has claimed these areas by right of strength. Look at where Ramirez is looking to claim: the Old Quarter inside the Barricades. And he wants to do it on the QT so that his competitors/equals won't learn of it. Not to mention the fact that he's riled that someone's opened a new gambling den without going through the 'proper channels' (ie, muscling in on his turf - maybe it's a gang-war in the making?).
There are obvious rivalries, as well - Raputo turns in DeWall to the Baron - who do you think took over DeWall's turf?
Idle thoughts on the matter - feel free to discuss.
