but unfortunately I don't think they will to any bigger degree.
First thing which popped into my head was the scale of walled section and assassins. Surely it would be a great help to get things in same scale!
I tried to by just looking at the levels in-game, but it's almost impossible that way.

And there's another name... Wieldstrom Museum. :)
Does "Wieldstrom" mean anything?
zifnab on 15/9/2005 at 14:27
Wield is a verb meaning to use a weapon or other object, such as a tool, with skill. Strom is often used as part of a name (never heard of the word "strom", personally). I think Wieldstrom is just a person's name, probably the main contributor to the museum.

"Strom" might suggest a Scandinavian origin, as the Swedish word "ström" means a stream. Notice the similarity in the two words; doubtless they share the same origin, which might be the Old High German word "stroum" meaning stream.

Also, if it is of scandinavian origin, "Wield" might be a variation of "Vild", meaning wild. "Ström" can also mean "current", but I doubt that's the case.

As an aside, the talk of translation is seriously side-tracking this particular thread - perhaps bukary and company should create a seperate thread to continue discussing interpretation of Thief location names, so that this one can get back to mapping discussions.

Quite right. Sorry about the diversion.

I don't agree. Finding out what the names really mean can indeed help us pinpoint the right locations of the districts. Shalesbridge - Stonemarket is but one example. Still, we should try to concentrate on the districts first and go into details (buildings and such) later and names are only a tool, not a means. My bad too for keeping it up.
So, how about making a bit structure, beginning with a list of things we don't know/can't agree on yet? (Leaving out the smaller ones, of course.) From there we can concentrate on one problem at a time. Right now there are so many things going on at once here you easily get confused. I feel we're constantly changing subject within the parameters of the thread, meaning that we don't really sidetrack but we dont keep focus either.
On the other hand, perhaps this is how we want to work out the map...
Oh, and I have a theory about the history of the City, but I'll post that in a new thread. It is geographical in essence, but really doesn't deal with the map.

Come on guys, no one should be this obsessesd with a game.
YOu're taking it for granted that whichever lackey at LGS thought up these names during a coffee break, didn't just pick them at random for absolutely no reason at all, or because they sounded cewl.
Let's work out the hidden meanings in all the Thief placenames, for therein lies the secret of eternal life. Hurrah!

I usually don't like to agree with assfaces, but you guys are reading too much in to some things. It's only a game afterall.
