Mapping out The City. - by Digital Nightfall

[EDIT: The Shalebridge tangent got me to thinking - there's a few subdivisions of the Old Quarter already - at least two, with the Wall, and the Barricades (the sealed off section). Why not a third or fourth? Old Quarter proper, and Shalebridge, for the area near the crossover point? Feel free to disregard - this is also rambling to myself for the SavWorlds conversion I'm working on.]
This, and the conversations involved got me thinking. I decided to give a try to one of the thought-lines, and here's the outcome:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/kartou/oddpiece.gifAs you can see, this setting will give more explaining to do than our current version, so in a way this should just further verify we took the right way with the River-bend. For example, could be argued that as Assassins! is newer than the Keeper-map, the River was 'paved over', and just goes below as canal-works. But then, why would people need to 'cross a lowered River', when as we know, Assassins! has barely any River visible?
This is a 'just for the record' -effort, to close open ends.
Sysqc: Your minimap looks just fancy. ;) One piece comes in mind though, the location of Shalebridge seen from Ambush!, and the Assassins! -Newmarket compared to the conversation of Bafford-servants. The two districts are just a tad too far in your scenario.

(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/str8g8/city_map_complete_new04.png) major changes
I'm not committed to this yet, but it's growning on me :) . A brief explanation:
It moves Ambush map down to the middle of South Quarter roughly in line with sysqc micromap. It means Crippled Burrick is next to Docks.
It also means the district borders shuffle round a bit. The effects weren't as bad as I feared however. Assassins and keeper map shuffle down a bit. Stonemarket shuffles east a little. It makes the shape of South Quarter less odd, as it no longer has a little sticky out bit to accommodate the Home Turf note.
It means that the "To Shalebridge" note on Ambush is a long,
long way from Shalebridge. However, we do have Shalebridge Rd to connect them (and we can change the path of Shalebridge Road, as it no longer has to go to the first bridge and meet up with the Cradle there, since that was relocated to its game location in Old Quarter).
I would like some opinions before I go to the trouble of reworking all the walls and streets ... :erg:

My only concern is the improbably sprawling nature of Old Quarter, but it's something I've pondered before. As far as city divisions go, I'd be hard pressed to explain why it would take such a shape.

Here we go again! :laff:
Alright, first off, Shalebridge, and thus the bending of the River were tied to Newmarket, which is seen in Assassins! and the Keeper map. The maximum distance from the River/Shalebridge to Assassins! should be the few houses seen in the north end of the Keeper map. That way Newmarket is still relatively close to be crossed properly. :)

In reply to str8g8 's post surely it would make more sense now that hightown is upriver and downtowne is down river?

Hah! I know of loads of little villages in England where the places with 'High' in their names are south and 'Down' in their names are on a hill. Maybe there is a hill involved!

Indeed Bronze, we have one piece of a hill that causes the River-bending. The details are sketchy, as the Sealed Section canals have to be taken into account and so forth.

Mugla: I'm well aware of the link between New Market and Shalebridge of course. but it's fundamentally the same layout so I don't see the problem with that, the river bend itself could be shuffled down a little if need be. This was really a rough draft as far as placing the original game maps, which had a knock on effect with the district borders. So there was always a patch of Old Quarter between NewMarket and Shalebridge, because it's there on the Assassin and Keeper map.
It was an assumption earlier on that the marketplace in the Ambush map corresponded to New Market so it got placed over there, even though it never really worked out (because we know G lived in South Quarter). Then we tried to keep G's apt as close as possible to the "Home Turf" note on Assassins. But I have come to the belief that the Ambush map shows us the heart of South Quarter. "Home Turf" can refer to South Quarter in general. And Gilver can go the Crippled Burrick.
Regarding the odd shape of Old Quarter: yes it is odd :erg: However if you bear in mind that Downtowne and Stonemarket could be considered part of Old Quarter (note the smaller typeface used for these districts, as opposed to the full Quarters) then the overall shape is not so odd.
I think Hightowne is on high ground (it accounts for the bend in the river).

Has anyone got a rough sketch of this yet? I'd be really interested in seeing it. Even if it looks like a five year old drew it.
