For instance, it means Garrett lives in the Docks in T2.
How's that?

In our layout the warden's districts form contiguous areas...
You are right. It doesn't make much sense in mine. Also, it would have been rather close to Dayport.

Also, can you explain the servants comments in light of your layout?
Well, it can be interpreted just about in one way: they would be able to cross the river. :joke:
Since my map wasn't of much use, I might as well throw some random thoughts about things I've gathered; I hope they haven't been already said.
What caught my attention was the final cutscene in T3. The glyph forms an "4 with horns". That is, the roads get lit with blue light which looks like a number four if you tilt your head when looking at the T3 map.
What I thought about it, was that the light starts from fountain at South Quarter (just outside Garrett's aparment, which is in the middle of the 4's horns), and continues to light in the areas where artifacts have been placed.
Graveyard, which is in the middle of the "4 with horns", is actually quite interesting in the light of that cutscene. Because it somewhat fits with the Ambush! -map (if taking into account the blocksize from the cutscene).

3D mapping:
Erm.. I think that 3D-mapping is a bit overkill. :D

Solabusca: That's my feeling also, it's part of the whole steampunk vibe of the City that it is much bigger than any medieval city really would have been. If we take the T3 city map as the entirety of the City, then it should be renamed the Town. I was considering placing an outer border around my map of greyed out "UNKNOWN" districts that could be explored in FM work, but that was for later.
sysq:
Because Garrett's home as marked on the Ambush map would fall into the Docks area, though I see you've updated the map and expanded South Quarter now so this is no longer the case. Makes the Docks a bit cramped however, and note that the glyph cutscene marks the Docks landing site thing as quite a bit inland (would be in SQ in your ma).

Well, there is more to it than that: the comment "New Market would
love that" has been interpreted as irony, or sarcasm, meaning that the snobbish residents on New Market would be horrified at the idea of people from lower class Shalebridge just walking across the river unchecked.
So there is still a river between Shalebridge and New Market in your map, but it is just one of the smaller canal/rivers ... and the above interpretation doesn't really make sense any more, because there isn't this large natural boundary between the districts anymore, ie the small canal\river would have plenty of crossing points anyway.
On a separate matter, the guy who is holidaying in Shalebridge and so can't attend Angelwatch - Shalebridge is now right across the river from Dayport! This makes even less sense now.

the assassins map and the keeper map fit together
well, the wall fits together perfectly, the roads ... well, don't at all.
I'd still be curious to hear other's opinions ...

^ I believe that I'm speaking on behalf of everyone when I say that you have out-ruled the location of Shalebridge being in the same area with Shalebridge cradle with logical reasoning (dayport, same side with newmarket, warden areas). I am perfectly happy with the explanation. :)
str8g8 on 21/7/2005 at 10:26
I was just testing the theory out. All arrangements have their own pros and cons:
Pro:
Shalebridge Cradle is in Shalebridge
Crippled Burrick pub is walking distance from Docks
Possibly more in line T3 devs intentions
Cons:
Warden districts
Shalebridge is same side of river as New Market
Shalebridge is too close to Dayport
The City is smaller
As it stands, I'm not sure the pros outweigh the cons, but I would like to hear Mugla and Doc_Browns opinions before ruling it out completely.
But also thanks for contributing your ideas - this thread can be a bit harsh sometimes. I have also been knocked back a few times. I hope it doesn't discourage you from posting in future. :)
cheers

I think there are already some histories of the City written (before t3 though) check out (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/) this link for a start. Maybe some things need updating?

Great str8g8, thanks for the link. There are many infos there, but not enough for my taste. You were planning to add details and points of interest for every quarter anyway, right? I think there should be more details for everything... Is there a mayor? Where does he live? Who built the cradle for example? Is there an architect? If not, why not invent one by picking a name from the many documents in The City found in the three games and make up a little story around this person? The possibilities are endless!

Moresy Blander was the Shalebridge Cradles architect and Lord Percival Pitwick apparently owns the land the Cradle stands on.

Oooooooh. Pretty - I used to have similar links for Amerstdam, I think it was... now to delve through the old links and see if it's still around.

re the size of the city:
Medieval cities could be quite large, certainly, but not by todays standards
Istanbul was the biggest city in Europe for most of the middle ages I think, with a population that fluctuated around 1 million (I think I read this somewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong).
today the population of Istanbul is around 10 million(!)
I like to think that the City is really bigger than these historical cities ... maybe 2-3 million? This is just the impression I get from cut scenes and so on.
One the other hand, I think our maps scale means that the population couldn't be any more than 2-3 hundred thousand. :erg: That's why I was considering unknown disctricts be placed around the city, perhaps to be fleshed out by the FM makers and so on ...
cheers
