Mapping out The City. - by Digital Nightfall

I'll get it uploaded tonight as is, but then may take on some of those things you mentioned. Perhaps hovering over a district shows its name as a tooltip, and clicking it toggles it on and off?

That sounds like a great idea!

No problem! Hopefully I can enhance it some in the future, although a quick glance at it in the dev console didn't help (all the images are part of the OL canvas and not directly accessible through div ids or classes, so that will make it a bit less straightforward).

Good to see that we have a legible map up and running, but still the map is missing a lot of details, like which building is which and what area is named and what isn't. Also having more drawn details would be nice.
I'm sure this will happen in the future though, so no rush.

Speaking of which, we've always wanted an artistic rendering of the map when all's said and done, valuable in and of itself but also useful as the "top" layer of an interactive map such as this. I don't think we've ever actually discussed what it should look like, though. Should it resemble one of the map styles from the games themselves, or should it be distinct?
Thoughts? Suggestions?

The broader question is, what do we want
from the art style? The way I see it, there are three options for the final rendering:
* It's for use as an in-game asset, therefore it should look like one of the in-game maps.
* It's just for us to look at, so it doesn't have to resemble any preexisting
Thief style.
* It's for use as a reference, so it should look as "realistic" as possible (see MorbusG's example (

Personally, I'm leaning towards either the first or third option you suggested.
However, I think it should be possible to include all three styles on the interactive map. There could be radio buttons that toggle the style being displayed, though each individual map image would need to be the same size across all the different styles.

(

The map was created by Robert Altbauer of (
http://www.fantasy-map.net/) Fantasy-Map.net. In terms of copyright, it falls under the Creative Commons Non-Commercial license. You're free to use it, free to modify it, I just ask that you give credit where credit's due (i.e. mention Robert and his site).
As for where we go from here? That's up to you. I know Yandros has his eyes set on an interactive version. I wouldn't be surprised if someone undertook the crazy task of figuring out where every FM is located. Feel free to include it in your FMs as well; it was designed to be easily modifiable for that very purpose.
