The latest dilbert-esque moment here involves a major chip manufacturer, the management, purchasing, oh and almost as an afterthought, me, a software guy.
* IC company discontinues a chip and the replacement is not software compatible.
* Managment decide to switch to the new chip.
* A prototype using the new chip is produced.
* Prototype lands on my desk with instructions to get it working.
* Software is updated (and quicker than my initial estimations) and the prototype works fine.
* Discussions occur amongst the software team about whether the B variant is better than the T. The conclusion is that B is better.
* Management is duly informed.
All looks fairly organized and straight forward, yes? A well-oiled engineering machine... except for the final step that is.
* Management reports that thousands of the T variant have already been purchased.
Right.
I'm rather curious as to what decision process the management went through to choose the variant, especially since they know nothing about the software and the the choice between T and B is dictated solely by the software. I fear that the answer will be "Uhh... we picked one at random".
Bonus points to anyone who can guess the chip manufacturer and the chips concerned.

This topic title has two redundant words in it.

T-chips and B-chips? That's nothing. Our manager was supposed to go out and buy a footballer, but he ended up buying Fernando Morientes instead.

Great, so you've just released the deadly T-Virus on an unsuspecting public. I hope you have enough green herbs to get yourself out of this one!

but green herbs only heal health, blue herbs heal poison.
And anyway, brains are the only cure for the T-virus...
