I've mentioned this in another thread, but here it goes.
One of the best ways to make a decent amount of gold is to steal. Of course, you need to join the Thieve's Guild to get access to their fences. Once you do, there's a magic shop in the IC Marketplace (Is it Magical Emporium? I can't remember.) Go inside after the owner has gone to sleep and you'll find quite a few valuable doodads left out.
You should go ahead and knock off all the shops in the Imperial City anyway. You'll come out with something like 5,000 to 8,000 gold, easy.

The Mystic Emporium, ah yes. I knocked that shop off after the proprietors refused to trade with my vampire-enhanced self.
Felt very strange going back to them to cheerfully buy equipment for Frostcrag Spire with their own money. :p

I posted this someplace around here. The best way to make money is to use sigil stones to enchant items then sell them. Alchemy doesn't earn you much money very quickly. There is hardly anything worth stealing in Cyrodill. You can do speedruns through Oblivion gates and grab the sigil stone pretty quickly, with a little practice. So you can net a few of them in a single day.
If you are a member of the mages guild you can create a fortify Mercantile 100 points for 2 seconds. This will allow you to invest in a store so you can net 1700 max gold instead of 1200, even if your base Mercantil is low. So if you get 4 of the most valuable sigil stones (Absorb Spell, Fortify Magicka, Water Walking, Water Breathing) in one day and use them to enchant ordinary items you can potentially make 6800 gold. Enough to buy a fine horse! In one day! In 3 days you can buy any house in Cyrodill you want. In practice you won't always get the most valuable sigil stones, e.g., enchanting something with Light gets you only 800 gold. But if you save a reload before snatching the stone, well, you can become rich in no time.
The tricky part of course is getting the stones. You can save before you enter an Oblivion gate and keep reloading until you get a plane that's easier to speed run through. Take a few health potions along because you WILL accumulate damage.

Money is hard to come by early in the game, but it really is valuable then.
Here's what I reccomend:
1) Good mercantile. I started iwth it as one of my main skills, excellent idea.
2) Pick up everything of value, but don't bother with items less than 40 base gold price.
3) Arena. This is the place to make money. Each match nets, depending on how high your rank is at the arena, somewhere between 50 and 3000 gold (but only once you are grand champion). In a few matches, you'll be making 200 gold in a few minutes. Just be sure you don't use too many health potions--they cost a lot.
4) Always repair your own armor and weapons. You can increase this really quickly if you always do it on your own. At a certain point, paying someone to repair it all after a quest can cost more than the money you got on the quest.
5) Do Mages Guild and Fighters Guild missions (Dark Brotherhood ones are really good too, good pay, easy work). pretty easy money and you'll find stuff on the way to sell
6) I don't steal much. All the fences are good at mercantile, making stealing goods to sell them not worth the effort.
7) Buy as little as possible. I really mean this. Buy nothing, except maybe some hammers and occasional health potions. Use your money on training instead.
8) Keep strong! It's hard at lower levels, and money is much more important at lower levels.
good luck!

The best way in the game (at least on the xbox360) is to become a vampire and cure the vampire cure quest. When done so you get a reward of 7500 gold. But the nice part of the quest is that you can ask for the reward again and he will give you 7500 gold again. you can do this as much as you want
I got 300.000 gold in two minutes this way.

go to the console. type 'player.additem 0000000F 99999999999999' it will max out your gold.

What, you can't come up with non-cheat and non-exploit ways to make money? Sad.
nick_m100 on 17/10/2006 at 11:07
i just don't feel an excessive urge to find or use a way thats not a cheat
theres always the arena.
RyushiBlade on 17/10/2006 at 13:31
I think Nick was pointing out that the first method was also a cheat. If you're going to take advantage of the game, you may as well save yourself time and just add the gold in yourself.
I haven't really found any super effective ways of making money. I just sell everything I can. Once you start getting up in levels, money is really easy to comeby thanks to the higher-level armors being a common sight.

Theres always the arena.
For those who don't know or might want to know, the arena is quite good gambling. It turns out that by increasing your luck past 40 {Maybe 50, I can't remember which} will increase the number of hitpoints of the person your betting on, so it increases your odds of sucess... {Stat boosts given by items will indeed help} of course, the odds of winning when your guy fights with his fists and the other is using a battle axe...then....well....eh.....
