After playing for a few minutes the lighting in the game starts to flicker on and off, textures disappear and reappear, and models start warping and generally go crazy (like single verticies decide to fly away from their normal position). The game also starts running very sluggishly during this and menu buttons have no text on them and the game basically is unplayable in this state. After exiting Theif 3, certain games will not run and ones that do crash a lot until I reset my computer.
My computer:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz
ATI Radeon HD 48500
2gb DDR2-SDRAM
Gigabyte EP43-DS3L Mainboard
Windows XP Home Edition 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3
DirectX 9.0c
It can run new games just fine so I don't know what is going on here. This doesn't happen in any other game I currently have. All drivers are up to date and all of that.
I am up to the Sunken Citadel mission (the one with the fishmen) if that means anything to anyone, but this stuff started fairly early on in the game (but it would last longer before going to hell).

I think it's the newest since I updated it recently. This happened before and after the update.

Bumping the thread as this still happens. I also updated my first post with more details concerning my system specs.

One silly question: is your GPU overclocked or overheated? What frequencies of GPU itself and graphics RAM? What temperature?

No overclocking at all. GPU is at 625mhz, 1004mhz for gpu memory.
Temp I can't actually check in game as I can't alt+tab out of the game. Playing for a bit just now and then exiting, the temp was at 60, up from an idle temp of 50.
I thought at first it might be overheating my card but I don't know how that would be possible as I run Crysis at higher settings than I should and I have no problems with my card overheating.
Unless there is something wrong with the actual game (like the way it was made or something) I can't see my computer melting from this game.

Weird... What about Catalyst Control Center or any other tool alike (ATI Tray Tool, Riva Tuner, etc) and their options? Maybe you have set something... unusual for TDS (like FSAA>1) and forgot about this? Have you tried to completely uninstall Catalyst and reinstall it again? Right now 10.3 is available, but I'm sure as of tomorrow 10.4 will be available as well.

I would try using the DC/HT patch: (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120790)
dualcore cpus can cause a ton of weird issues with older games-I have installed call of duty recently, and the ai kept freezing, scripts were malfunctioning,I have patched the game to run on one core only, problem solved..
