OK, so this may sound like an obvious question, but is my percentage chance of casting a spell directly related to my skill in that school of magic? If my skill goes up does my percentage chances? And does that skill affect anything else magic-wise (ie damage done or whatever?)
I ask because when I make spells I seem to have a very small chance of casting them (I'm only about five or six hours in at the moment)

yep
The chance for a successful cast depends on the SKILL and the governing ATTRIBUTE.
So for a fireball it will be the "Destruction school" and Willpower.
Btw, Luck counts to a minimum to it as well. Also the amount of fatigue left. (Not the maximum you can have! But with zero fatigue left, the chance drops by a few percent)
Someone posted once a formula. Or was it on the HP done by Striker?

There is a cheap and easy spell you can make for a mage that is very useful for close up battles:
Fire damage 20 pts for 1 sec and paralyze for 3 sec on touch.
You can cast this spell repeatedly and the enemy will never touch you. :)
I call my version 'Flaming Hands of Stillness'. :D
-edit- I should add that I find myself using this spell very often with my level 37 Breton mage. I don't expect I will ever stop using it, it's that useful.
