First time I played with a female Dunmer Agent, second time with male Dunmer Rogue-Warrior (selfmade class).
The Rogue-Warrior was very good at everything (fighting, stealth, social) except magic. He didn't know anything of magic and his intelligence was rather low. Both had The Lady as birthsign and were fun to play.
Third time I tried to make a magic based character: male Orc, some kind of selfmade battlemage class, birthsign: The Mage. But it has been so damn unrewarding. It took forever to get the first level-up, I barely get money for the stuff I sell and pay high prices, and to persuade people I have to give them lots of bribes.
Further more I thought I could make money in the Mage's Guild, but there I am paying more than anything else. I couldn't even loot the chests I stumbled across (paying 150 for Ondushi's Unhinging is a bit counterproductive)
My goal is highest rank in House Telvanni. (What are their requirements?)
Any tips for a Battlemage/Wizard's smooth start? Is there anything that makes them fun in the beginning of the game?
Edit: Sorry, first time I missed that there is a similar thread although I looked.

Well a battlemage is supposed to wield heavy or medium armor, and fight with sword and spell at the same time. I think they're specialization is combat... might not be though. Anyway, Mages are not good at all with starting characters... You'll get money and such eventually. But you have to have patience. Mages tend to be extremely powerful in the higher levels, but down low... Well, they couldn't kill a rat if their lives depended on it. Basically practice your magic manually withought buying anything. get some alchemical equipment, then try making some potions... you'll be turning three or four usless ingrediants into superb health potions. Then you can sell these to Creeper (A Scamp in a manor in Caldera) at full price. With four or five potions thats close to about 400 - 500 drakes. When you think your a high enough level you can try stealing from the Vaults in Vivec. (I'm not gonna explain how, other threads that you can search for already say, and it can get to be a long explanation.)
Anyway As you gain levels, try taunting an ordinator. It could take awhile, and if your really in a hurry use some potion money to buy some speechcraft training. Then go back, taunt him. He'll attack, but hopefully you'll be able to blast his brains out with spells. (One of the ladies on the top floor of the Vivec mages guild sells a very effective scroll. It gives you full Daedric armor that wieghs nothing. for about 60 seconds. :sly: ) When you finally kill qan ordinaor take the armor to Creeper in Caldera. Make sure you have it repaired first. then sell it to him. You should get a good couple thousand Drakes. Continue doing this until your satisfied with the amount of money you have. (Note: for some reason ordinators attack you on sight after you kill like 5 of them. So try to just kill 4.)
Also when you join house Telvanni, do ALL of the quests your given first, withought gaining ranks unless it's necesarry for more quests.. (At least if you wanna become the archmigister.) Master Aryon doesn't feel the need to tell you that you have a choice between two of the ranks. If you just keep gaining ranks withought a care you'll soon ind that you can't advance to archmagister because your already a counciler.
Hope this helps. :thumb:

I've just finished the Telvanni with a dark elf battle mage atronach so i'll give you some advise.
My Battle Mage custom class is exactly the same as the standard class except i've removed the marksman minor skill and replaced it with athletics. The custom class should look something like this -
Battle Mage
Magic specialised
(intelligence and strength)
Major skills
1. Axe (nothing like hitting people with a massive double handed daedric battle axe).
2. Heavy armour (best protection in the game but very heavy).
3. Conjuration (the best magic art IMHO for the beginner battle mage - summon weapons and armour which way nothing.
4. Destruction (becomes better later on and provides ranged attacks).
5. Alteration (you'll use this art so much with levitation and opening locks etc).
Minor
1. Long Blade (gives you the option to use some of the unique weapons in the game).
2. Athletics (no one likes to be slow and you level up a little quicker ;) ).
3. Mysticism (mark and recall, divine and almisvi intervention - enough said).
4. Enchant (enchanted items use less charge the better your enchant skill is).
5. Alchemy (very powerful later on).
When you first start this character (in seyda neen) you should steal as much as you can e.g. silver table wear, alchemy ingrediants etc and do all the mini quests. Once complete get yourself over to Balmora and fort moonmoth and pick yourself up a steel battle axe, and steel/imperial steel armour. Once you've done this take a rest and go visit some of the mages guilds, temples, and telvanni towers to get the bound axe spell and all the bound armour spells you can find (can't get greaves, or pauldrons). During your travels look out for mark and recall and the intervention spells among others like a levitation spell, open spell, fire damage spell etc. Once you feel you have a decent enough spell list go join the telvanni at sadrith mora.
I chose the atronach star sign because it's pros far out way it's cons - if you're low on magica just summon a ancestral ghost get it to attack you and the spell absorbtion will do the rest :) . Remember you'll get summon ancestral ghost as your starter conjuration spell.
Once in the telvanni you'll be given all sorts of rewards like free spells and enchanted items which will make yor life far easier. I reccomend if you are low on money searching for my "deadric weapon of your choice thread" which not only gives instructions for a new character to get a nice daedric weapon ( ;) yes a daedric battle axe) but also tons of raw ebony (40 - 60!) which you can sell to the high elf alchemist in Balmora for thosands of gold coins.
Hope this helps. :D
