Wow this game is a cakewalk on medium difficulty, in 2002 this would have been Very easy.

Got back to the Free Ride missions after a little break from the game. Last time I got frustrated at the exploding bus mission, but this time I nailed it on the second time - a nice little drive on the countryside was all that it took.
Speaking of the countryside, the level of detail there is actually quite amazing, considering that you never really have to go there during the main story! I wonder if they're planning to release any DLC for this game. I've still got a few Free Ride missions left to play, but I'd be happy to pay for some more content, even if it was just silly little missions like these. :)

I actually do kinda have my eye on this one. I detest the original, thought II was playable but bland slurry, didn't bother with III.
Can't really justify the purchase at the moment though -- got Christmas presents to buy for people.

Yeah june, I remember your stance on the original Mafia (let's not go there again though, eh? :D), and only after playing the remake I realise that I was stubbornly defending some of the "realistic" aspects of the original. (I still have fond memories of the original and I guess it'll always stay up there in my all-time favourites, but I wouldn't dare touch it anymore after all these years, especially after playing the remake.) For example I thought that the annoyingly slow cars were perfectly okay because of course cars of that era were supposed to be annoyingly slow, right? Well, yeah, except that in the remake the cars still feel old and the ordinary cars are kinda slow, but they're still fun to drive. I think they've managed to find a good balance between fun and so-called realism now. You also get a bunch of difficulty levels to choose from, and in general I think the remake is a bit easier, so you don't really get those seemingly unfair insta-deaths anymore, even on the Classic difficulty. You can change the difficulty any time you like too.
It's nice to see how faithful the remake is to the original though. I like pretty much all the changes that they've made to the game, but they still haven't turned it into a typical modern shooter. They've added a cover system that I found a little clumsy at first, but you'll soon get the hang of it. It's not about rushing from one cover to another while going bang-bang-bang, you still need to be careful, at least on the higher difficulty levels. Driving is damn fun, you just gotta find a car that suits your driving style. (Some of them are awful to handle!) There's still no open world which is fine by me - I don't think I'd even like to see any extra activities in the story mode. And yes, the story... well, it's still pretty much the same too; a couple of minor changes here and there, but it's still full of old Mafia cliches, so you know what's coming even if you've never played the game, but I think it works really well! Then again, I thought that Godfather III wasn't that bad either, so you might want to discard my opinion on mafia stories right away. :p
The chances are that if you didn't like the original, you won't find the remake a masterpiece either, but I honestly think that you might enjoy this one. Let us know if you give it a try some time, june!

I finally managed to beat the Alien Infiltration level (in Free Ride)! I insisted on playing it in Classic difficulty, and after knowing the locations where the alien ship stops, the driving part of the mission became easy enough, but I must have failed the shootout bit at least twenty times. The rest of the missions were easier, and I found all the hidden cars too, so I think I'm done with the game for now. I did only just discover that you can go to the race track in Free Ride and race with any car in the game (I might want to try that later), and of course I've still got a bunch of magazines and those foxes to collect, but the foxes at least are hidden a bit too well, so I don't think I can be bothered.
I also found a couple of hidden costumes!

So what's the verdict on this in the context of the previous 3 games? It looks to me like it's a pleasant combination of the gameplay from 1 and 2 without the issues 3 had.

Mafia 3 felt like they nailed the underlying systems (the driving, the stealth/action gameplay), but then didn't have to time for story and mission design. DE takes the systems 3 set up and puts a compelling story on top of em. The end result is the best Mafia game yet.

Believe it or not, that part is actually true to the original. :D

Joyfriend bought it for me during the autumn sale so I guess I'm swinging through it at some point in the not-too-distant future. We'll see, I guess. Might muddle through the original first, see how they compare.
