You know, Mafia 2, when I played it, I really wasn't very accommodating of at the time. I felt it was a watered-down story with a gorgeous game world and nothing really innovative to make it stand out from, say, a GTA. I have a feeling I'd be more generous to it now if I replayed it.
Having said that, M2's definitive edition appears to have some issues at the moment, like resolution problems and toned down physics, if the Steam forum squealing is anything to go by. It may need a patch or two.

Yeah, people were hard on it at release because A. they heard about all of the cut content and/or B. the open world was just immersive window dressing for an entirely linear, story-driven game.
