Well the reviews have started (
http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/mafia-ii/critic-reviews) pouring in. Gamespot gives it a 8.5, IGN gives it a 7, and Eurogamer slams it with a 4. I think I'll wait until the price drops before picking up this one. Not that I was going to buy it on day 1 anyway.
Have any TTLGers played it yet? Are there any sidequests? Or are there any other reasons to explore the city when not doing a mission?

I find it pretty hard to take Eurogamer seriously anymore, it's like they were just desperately trying to seek attention by slating and giving bad reviews for some "high-profile" games. It's funny how they blame Mafia II for a lot of things that sucked in GTA 4 as well (for example the checkpoints), yet GTA 4 gets 10/10 from them and Mafia II gets 4/10... Something tells me that Eurogamer may be
a bit biased.
Then again, they also gave the first Mafia game only (
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_mafia) 4/10 and it turned out to be one of my favourite games ever. Reading that review, now that I've finished Mafia a few times, shows that Eurogamer were talking out of their arse there, so I'm just going to ignore their review of Mafia II as well and buy the game.

Everything I heard says it has no sidemissions and zero reason to explore the city.

Just like the first one then. Oh well as long as it has a decent main storyline and good missions it'll still be worth getting on the cheap.

Yup. That's about what it is.

i like the story sofar. the shit gameplay is a little less shit but still typical 3rd person console cover shootie. started on hard and died only once yet and made it past act 1. what they got right is the atmosphere, detail, soundtrack, voiceovers and animations, just like in M1 and that's enough for me. I see it as a big tpp adventure game rather than a shooter or driving game. Actually, I never liked the driving in M1 either besides the nailbiting race and explosive delivery mission. The missions now seem smaller, I hope for a later epic misssion like the dock/trainyard in M1. Not sorry for full price.

Eurogamer's review is upsetting.

It's the ultimate example of a game designed to look nice in television commercials and achieve nothing else.

It's a 14-year-old's vision of the mafia, although that slanders the many 14-year-olds who would see through this game's desperation to appear adult.

Mafia II puts up such a convincing facade that it's hard to believe Empire Bay is, in fact, practically empty

yeah, the sidekick IS stupid. but not stupid enough. it's a lesser game because of the decisions they made: no clip lost, no one-shot kills, sidekicks are invincible, changing clothes/cars is boring, unlimited inventory, there was already a "collect stuff in 30minutes" GTA clone mission and the main character's motivation for being an asshole is not clear but the setpieces/vignettes mock the movies I like so I am very entertained.
