Well, they were fighting to keep Greece free from foreign tyranny. Domestic tyranny was ok.

So, Spartans = Iraqis then ?????
Mr.Duck on 6/1/2007 at 05:59
Only in the end the King of Sparta gets to die in glorious battle instead of being hanged
Me, I'll go and watch it for some mindless fun, and if all odds against it happen to be wrong, yay for me.

How can people get so excited over Lord Of The Rings: Naked, Shouting Greeks? It's just a cash-grab sequel.

Ok ok, you don't like me, I get it. And it obviously blinds you of any humor.
But no, I was named (7 years ago no less) after the book, by Paulo Coelho. It's a fable about following your dreams. <3
Also I don't really see the LOTR similarity other than lol swords. I see this movie as a really styalistic action film, ala Sin City but more violence and cliche action. Well, Sin City had a lot of those too. Anywho I don't see the issue, it's a fun action film involving a cool group of people in a famous battle with a very styalistic visual appeal. How can it be horrible?

but I'd prefer a historical treatment of Thermopylae to this hyper-stylized nonsense.

What the fuck is wrong with you dicklocks? This is a movie based on a comic book that tells a heavily-mythologized story of a bunch of fucking guys beating the shit out of each other with swords and shit.
All those who think this sounds cool as fuck will please join me in the line at the theatre. All those who want to whine about "it's not riiiiiiiiiight" are welcome to spend another night sitting at home alone in front of the History Channel.

Oh, sorry, I forgot that if something is popular, or in the mass media, it's not worth your time. My bad, please, forget about this nonsense.
jackasses.
I'm not above watching a mindless action movie but your post sounded like everything that gets "advertised the crap out on myspace" should have a thread here (already). I just thought that was funny. ;)

Don't make me spank you Malygris. My point is that the battle of Thermopylae was interesting enough as it was (don't you dare go down the revisionist-history-Herodotus-LOL path) without dumbing it down. If there was a tradition of homosexual paedophillic relationships then why not portray that, why does it have to be: "cousin, totally my cousin I swear"?
If you claim Battle of Thermopylae then deliver that.
If you claim based on the Iliad then don't rape that story and Homer's subsequent poems up the ass. Why not just keep it as close to fact as possible?
