I've never seen this show, but I hear that it's very good. Can I pick up and start watching it from Season 3 (the one that is currently airing) or will I be utterly lost?
Cheers.

Dunno about whether you *can* watch it from season 3, though I don't know why you would - why not just rent Season 1 and start with that?
I got about three episodes into the first season before I was bored to tears. The production values were excellent, the acting was good, it was somewhat original, but incredibly repetitive. It was like three 60-minute sermons where they just kept saying "Hey, the 50s/60s were really sexist! Man, what a sexist universe! SO SEXIST!"
To be fair, I imagine the show improves as it goes along (one can't make three seasons out of such repetitive material, can you)?

I don't have the money to justify gambling on blind purchases of DVD season boxsets at the moment. I doubt the local video rental shop would carry it either. It's much easier for me to pick up and watch what's airing now.

While i agree that the show took me a few episodes to appreciate; I now freaking love it and am totally enraptured with Season 3.
You absolutely must watch it from the beginning though - the acting quality and story telling is top rate and most importantly clever as fuck.
Speaking of fucking, season 3 is set in the 60's and there has been a lot of fucking sofar, be it Don (Jon Hamm - phenomenal actor) and Betty his insanely hot wife, or busty German nannies, hell there's even a hint of man loving for the gays amongst us.
In conclusion, watch this show - watch it or Jon Hamm will fuck you - and you'll enjoy it.

Yeah I've only seen the first two seasons so far and it has been the only tv show so far to fill my post-Sopranos hangover. It's sublimely written, unpredictable, and thoroughly confusing at times. Watch it, right now.
And yes, Aerothorn, you've missed the point completely.

I've been meaning to get around to this show... Watching Flight of the Conchords just now, so it might be nice to mix it up with a little drama.

This really isn't true. The first episode or two contains a few overt loltehpast moments but that's really it. They aren't lampshading much at all. The late fifties were actually like that. As mentioned, it actually works best if you just get over it and watch the show. You know the plot, dialogue etc. Try it.
Anyway, I haven't caught up with it after s1 despite liking it a lot. I was put off by the jump in time between seasons, as I wanted to see things play out. I also thought it might die off since few seemed to be watching at the time. But it's huge now and still great apparently, so one of these days I'll rent it.

There's dialog? What? Man, I missed that. I'll have to check that out.
Seriously, you're more than welcome to disagree, but just because I found the first few episodes pretty dull doesn't mean I'm a TOTAL MORON.
