Anyway the verdict on the Steam Community has been overwhelmingly positive for this game. It's not another Arkham Knight port either.

Sigh. That reminds me of the energy drink advertising strewn through "Dredd vs Death" (including the demo, which promptly caused me to lose any interest in buying the game until years later when it was all of about $2.50 in a sale on GOG).

When advertising comes in the form of free, totally optional DLC, I'm fine with it. The advertisers get publicity, the devs get money, I get an extra car. What's the downside here, exactly?

It totally kills Avalanche and WB's indie, anti-corporate and anti-consumerist cred.
Remember, when companies try to make money off of the products they create they're bad people.

Giving TW3 a rest while I race through Mad Max. The story is very barebones. The character writing is pretty terrible all around. The writers seems to have interpreted the "mad" in Mad Max as "angry". In every interaction the guy has with anyone he's barking orders and demands and just generally being an angry, unpleasant guy. And most of the other characters are weirdoes who I guess are supposed to be funny, but aren't. The gameworld is... a big desert. The landscape is defined less by interesting landmarks and more by what kind of icon the different locations are marked with on the map, and the bearing those icons have on the gameplay. The gameplay itself is competent. The fighting is solid, but not up there with Batman or Sleeping Dogs. The driving is ok and the harpoon is fun to use.
There's a lot of road still ahead. Unlockable upgrades for Max and his car might give the gameplay more depth, and perhaps the story might even end up going somewhere interesting, but right now I must say this whole thing is off to a very bland start.

I bounced off it after about 4 hours. I may come back to it if I really feel in the mood some time, but my backlog contains more compelling things.

I'm getting close to the end of the story now I think, and I've softened a lot on Mad Max. The fighting is pretty great actually! I said previously that it's not on the same level as Batman and Sleeping Dogs, but it is, really, I was being harsh. And the CONVOYS! I hadn't done any of these sidemissions by the time of my last post, but it's a lot of fun intercepting these convoys. Finding a good spot to attack, looking at the approaching dust clouds through binoculars, and then tearing off after them as they pass by. It can be a long, drawn out affair taking one of these trucks down, and I feel it very much captures the feeling of the chase scenes in the Mad Max movies.
It's not all sunshine and roses though, I've found new things to complain about as well! Most gallingly is the abysmal vehicle variety. Oh sure, there's probably 30 or 40 different cars to drive in the game, but they're just that,
cars. No motorbikes! No monster trucks! Hell, NO WAR RIGS! Seeing how big a part big rigs are in the movies, it's a disappointing omission here.
Also, this is one of the buggiest PS4 games I've played. Once it crashed, and lately I've been having a lot of audio issues, with everything but dialogue cutting out for up to a minute at a time.
There is a Photo Mode though. I love photo modes.

This has been really cheap on cdkeys.com basically since it came out, but everytime I'm close to picking it up I remember that the Fallout series exists and figure I'd be better off replaying FNV again if I want a good post-apoc experience.
henke on 29/12/2015 at 09:17
Yeah if you're in the market for a post-apoc experience I wouldn't recommend Mad Max either. It's a fun thrill ride, there's not much emphasis on survival. There are only a few gameplay things that deal with that. For instance your health doesn't regenerate, instead you need to eat food or drink water, so it's a good idea to always keep your canteen filled. And your car uses fuel, but honestly the fuel drains so slowly and is so plentiful that I never even came close to running out. And even if I did I could just use the spare gas tank I've kept in the back of my car, unused, for the entire game. Surviving the wasteland of Mad Max is never a struggle, at most it's an inconvenience.

Finished the main story tonight. Overall, it's a solid game-based-on-a-movie. At moments it really captures the feeling of Mad Max's chase scenes, and the narrative and characters feel true to the movies as well, although not as fleshed out or interesting as anything in the movies.
A few snippets of gameplay from my time with it:
