Though I'm not going to get into a big what is art debate I would like to say that Deus Ex is very much like a novel, and novels are fully capable of being art. The depth and complexity provides and image and athletic far more thought provoking than some things considered art.
It seems to me to be four-dimensional interactive art.

Nah, but Ali may not be far from the mark.
That "Nah", was in there to mark disregard toward the previous comment. Eh, the major problem with the internet's text based functions is how difficult it is to indicate tonal accentuations. That and I am totally, 100% inept at using simileys.

Ive never had Jock die. Im a naturally suspicious bastard and talked to the mechanic and then when i wasnt convinced i knocked him out and told Everett. Then u find the bomb on jocks chopper an drop it in the ocean when jock defuses it

you don't actually have to intereact with everett or jock ever i don't think. Just take out the guy. I can't remember fully though. Anyway, though I know what BR7 means, it's true, art is art, it's about your perception. What you ackowledge as art or not doesn't make it not art.

How is that if Jock die you survive? Jock never died in my game, because after the sad moment with lucius da beer I wanted to get in a better mood, and how could I do that? Easily, harassing sub-employees. And as soon as the bastard begun to get creepy on me I stuck a bomb on his ass (planing to quickload the game after that because I hate to kill ¨innocents¨) but hey, lucky shot, I didnt had to quickload
If you fail to apprehend the saboteur in Everett's, Jock is doomed. Over the course of the next few missions, he mentions the helicopter is acting strangely, making odd noises etc. Then, when he sets you down outside Area51, thinks get bad. He takes off, the helicopter sways in the air. His last words are "JC, we got problems. Somebody planted a bo...." Then the helicopter explodes rather spectactularly. Then it's Brian "Jock" Flanagan R.I.P
I always save him, because he's cool, and one of the very few DX characters who always seems to stay true to JC through everything.

Hell, if you told me before playing that I would be genuinely upset about the death of my virtual helicopter pilot, horribly guilty about accidentally knocking a homeless womans cat off a building and killing it,

I think that one of the most interesting things about Deus Ex is the way that it kind of 'predicted' the future, with global terrorism, the threat of bioterrorism, etc. I think that the way that it invites people to question what they see and what the best course of action would be (ie. the ending).. I'm not sure if I'd call this art, but maybe it is better and more worthwhile than (whatever) Art is supposed to be? :erg:
Although I still see Deus Ex as being kind of cheesy in some ways (the stuff that helps to make the game fun - augs etc. detract from the political / social issues), but it would be interesting to see games set in mordern day world which examined issues relevant to peoples lives. Maybe a hitman / snooping game? Anyway.
How did you knock the cat off the building? Was it by running into it, or some other way?
Ali on 13/9/2003 at 23:02
Heh, I was zooming-in to see what was going on at the bottom of the disused elevator shaft and turned quickly to walk away and it seems said cat had been rubbing up against me and was now airborne. I then watched in horror as it let out a cry and withered some floors below. The real guilt hit when I took out the greasels and realised that the cats were the womans pride and joy. Oops. :p
Javert4186 on 28/9/2003 at 03:59
I always feel AWFUL when I squish a cat that has somehow gotten underfoot. Also, when I hear about the NSF guys shooting the Mole person's cat, it is all I can do not to go on a killin' rampage, even after they stand down [In the tunnels under New York].
As far as "art" goes, art is anything where the result is somethnig that could not have been created by rote application of the rules of a system. By that metric, Deus Ex is art, because it is groundbreaking. People who do cutting edge math are doing art. Invention is in a way art. Craft is the execution of rules but with a high degree of precision and skill (Half-life is closer to craft).
So there:ebil:

Call me cruel, but that always made me laugh... these up-until-now megahyped "terrorists" take over this underground base, and the evillest thing they do is kill a cat to spook somebody.
