I had another account here, forgot my pw and no longer have my erols email account so could not retrieve my pw. That will teach me not to update email address. Now I use a web one so when I switch isps its not a problem and this wont happen again.
Been playing thief since the demo came out on pc-gamer ohh so many years ago. 97 I think.
Once I found out about fms I found thief-thecircle which led me here and been around ever since.

I don't understand what dark magic do you guys apply to your computers to be able to play this fucking game?
I haven't seen another so power-hungry game ever!
I've had now three different computers in which I've tried to play this beast, and I'm starting to lose my mind:
1) 2Ghz P4, 1Gb mem, GF6800GT, Audigy gamer
2) 3Ghz AMD, -"-
3) iMac 17", 1.5Gb mem, ATI X1600
Do you have, like, a friggin 16*XEON 4Ghz 16Gig memory 4*GF9999 OR WHAT???
Well OK, I'm able to get the game to run at decent rate after I have all the details/resolution/basicallyeverything set to minimum. After that my vision is restricted to like 2 meters. Whee. Not.
Or are you just supposed to be playing it in a turn-based way? With enemies getting 3 turns for your 1 turn?
Seriously, to whom is this game made for if one's not able to play it before 10 or so years when hardware meets the demand? How did they even develop this game?
If all else fails, I'm going to get a Xbox360. :(
Well I'm going to get one anyway, but I need to buy another version of the same game, which pisses me off.

You need a better video card. I have to play on mininum settings also.
The 3ghz athlon64 shouldve been fine, the video card was holding you up.
I have :
sempron 3100+ stock 1.8 at 2.25ghz
radeon 9600pro 128mb
1gb PC3200 ram
Problem is the game is very poorly written. No one can run it at max settings, even a $10,000.00 computer cant play it at max.

The 6800 GT is a card powerful enough to run Oblivion with medium/high settings in at least 1024x768. It's insanely powerful compared to a radeon 9600, so it seems to me that you're having a hardware/driver problem.

My Graphics is a 6600GT and I intentionally kept an old CRT to run Oblivion on a mere 800 x 600 with low-mid settings and got good frame rates in return for the tradeoff.

I run:
AMD 64 3500+
Gigabyte K8N SLI
Albatron 6600GT 128 PCie
1GB DDR400
everything turned up highest and res of 1280 x 1024 also performance and pretty tweaks. min of 16FPS. runs sweet

I'm pretty stingy about framerates. I want them to be good. All the time. So I've done a lot of tweaking and, granted, my game won't look as good as others running a similar setup to mine (Radeon x850xt PE AGP), but atleast it's a smooth ride all the way through. Tweaking the ini is the best way to go, ESPECIALLY if you decrease grass density. Look on the mods threat to find a link to an ini tweaking page.

Sounds like it's associated with Direct3D and by extension DirectX. You could try re-installing DX9c.
