Is it just not optimised or something? The graphics don't seem much nicer than those of FarCry and that runs as smoothly as an extended metaphor for something very smooth.
Xbox runs it better? Does the Xbox version have 4x4 pixel testures?
EDIT: NOW WITH ROLLEYES!

io, I think the processor could be the bottleneck there
I can absolutely guarantee that Oblivion is CPU limited rather than GPU limited towards the higher end. I get the same playable framerate at (
http://www.awesomeexpress.com/ttlg/oblivion_huge.jpg) 2560x1024 as 1280x1024, which comes as quite a surprise as I expected the amount of 'stuff' the game renders to tax the GPU.

Why ? He's right when saying that it's not much nicer than Far Cry. And he's also right when implying that a lot of engines do things far better than GameBryo.
The xbox comment is rolleyes though.

Athlon XP 1700+
Radeon 9600SE 128MB
512M RAM PC133
Mostly the lowest settings possible. Very playable but some issues with the larger battles later in the game, and with the sigil towers (the flame column causes the fps to drop some it seems).

Radeon 9000 64 Mb here. With oldblivion. Very unplayable with dynamic light on in exteriors. Very playable in interiors though.

 Wow! I can't believe it! My comp acutally conquered this awesome game. Just to remind you of my system:
custom built pc with an AMD 2500Xp+(about P4 2.5GHz)
1.5G Kingston RAM
PNY Nvidia GeForce 6600 (Not GT!)(AGP 8X with 256MB DDR)
80GB Hard drive & 160GB External USB Drive
19in LCD Samsung Monitor with 3ms response time!
I MAXED!!! OUT the graphics settings everything is on HIGH , shadows full, antiasling 4X, the HDR lighting had to be turned off because it can't run when antiasling is enabled. Grass, grass shadows, viewing distance, water, ripples, basiclly all the EYE CANDY is on!!! I get on average 38fps indoors. Outdoors is yet to be tried out, but i'm sure it won't be that bad. So, everyone with comps like mine, alittle worse, or better= YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT!IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO YET, GET THE GAME!IT'S AWESOME!:erg:

Don't be so sure about that outside, hehe. The initial dungeon area is VERY easy on the system

:D The outside is fine too. All I had to do is turn off antiasling. Everything else is still maxed out. Works smooth just like inside the dungeons. woohoo!!!
