I've read in a number of places now that while the heat fan in PS3s is pretty good, the thermal paste they're using isn't, and it's applied pretty inconsistently.

Thirith, I wouldn't open it if I was you.
You're going to lose your guarantee and there is a VERY big chance it will be for nothing.
If you absolutely can't live with the noise you may consider to send it to local Sony service center, not to your seller. Sony should care about it for free, including shipping.
As infered above, what I was getting at is this will be covered by warranty and all it will cost is shipping to them. What part of the world are you located in..?

I'm located in Switzerland.
242, I see what you're saying - although the evidence definitely points towards problems with the thermal paste rather than the cooler - it isn't loud to begin with, but it revs up to the 2nd and 3rd level within minutes, which would be understandable if I was playing something that's heavy on the processor and GPU, but according to everything I've read it shouldn't happen when playing Blurays.
Will have to think about this some more...

Tha'ts DEFINITELY a warranty fix then..

I do agree. As I said earlier if it's within warrenty then it's not worth the risk, however slight. Do you have any local contacts that can help arrange reasonable cost courier shipping to a USA Sony Centre?

Thirith, this might be too obvious, but are you sure it isn't just the disc-drive vibrating? I noticed that when I had my PS3 Slim on a glass shelf the disc drive would spin, causing the whole console to vibrate, which resonated in the shelf, resulting in a lot of noise. Moving the PS3 to the bottom shelf fixed it.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

I'm pretty certain it isn't that, for three reasons: 1) I've had the PS3 in two different places and it does the same regardless of location, 2) the difference in sound strongly suggests a revving up to some second, then third level, as we're talking about discrete and consistent sound levels and pitches, and 3) the same happens whether the Blu-ray is accessed or the HD.

er there should be a a official Sony repair in Switzerland.. despite the fact its a strange country (you cant have a loud exhaust pipe but you can carry a gun...)

Yeah - and I'm pretty sure that Sony should be under obligation to fix a problem with their units regardless of where they were originally sourced from. In fact, at the back of my mind I seem to remeber some court cases which upheld a similar situation but that involved cars and not consoles.
However (and I really hate to say this) Sony may kick up a fuss about repairing an import console under warrenty even if they are legally obliged to do so. Of course, Thirth may find that that it isn't a problem getting it fixed locally but if not then there may still be lower cost options than sending it to a third party repair centre.

It would be cool if who ever does it is an authorized repair center, so the warranty stays intact..
