Water pressure holding the door closed. And if he'd left the door open the air pressure keeping the water in the moon pool would be lost, so the water would come in with enough speed and force to prevent Desmond and Charlie from getting into the diving gear before dying.

I agree. i think when he tells the chief of surgery to "call my father and see who is more drunk", it was more like a sarcastic comment to emphasize the trauma that he has already been through (his father's death et al)
