Ben can talk to Jacob. And he seems to be the only one who could up til Locke showed up. That'd give him alot of pull with the natives, and give them enough of a reason to elect him their leader.
The thing is, the Others don't seem to be a particularly evil group of people. They tend to go to extremes following whatever their "purpose" is, but they're not really bad. Ben is though. He's a complete bastard. And while it's obvious the Others keep him around simply because he talks to Jacob, why does Jacob only talk to him?

Maybe because Ben can talk to dead people? He saw his mother when he was a child, and the "hostiles" seemed to be impressed by that.

Locke won't die. He's too central a character to the plot. But I'm taking bets that Ben won't live to see season 4.
I found myself 'WTF!'ing all over the place during last night's episode. No, really; my head exploded a gazillion times!! I agree Renz, Locke
can't die; he's far too integral to the whole series. You know the Island won't let him die, right? However I disagree that Ben will get whacked soon only because he's so very fun to hate. I did find myself actually feeling sorry for Ben as a kid (against my will, mind you); his father was absolutely despicable. And once again the authors tied up another small mystery: the van, the corpse in the van and the beer. Very Pulp Fictionish. Loved it!

Did anyone else pick up on the hint that the Others are either immortal or very long lived? .....throughout Ben's flashback you noticed that same guy didn't age while Ben and everyone else in the Dharma Initiative did. I'm gonna guess that the Others are the original passengers of the Black Rock, and they managed to maintain their youth by living off the island, while the Dharma people imported their foodstuff from the mainland.
I thought at first maybe I was mistaking the guy in Ben's flashback for somebody else before it dawned on me that it was the same guy and he didn't look a day older so many years later when Ben was an adult. Man! Those writers are sooo devious; they solve one mystery and then whack you in the head with yet another. It's giving me the hiccups.

I'm also gonna say that Jacob is the physical manifestation of the power behind the island, and wasn't a passenger on the Black Rock. Also, the fact that the people that live off the land gain immortality at the cost of bearing children kinda gives off a Garden of Eden vibe to me.
My head almost popped off during the Jacob's cabin scene! At first I, like Locke, thought Ben had gone off the deep end, but when things started flying and thumping and then you heard that creepy voice (I couldn't make out the words) I started wondering if maybe there
was someone in that chair. But then I thought maybe Ben was either a.) telekinetic, or b.) great with smoke and mirrors. I also thought I saw that shadow Brother R. refers to. Maybe Jacob was one of the earliest visitors to the Island (remember the reference to the ancient-looking ruins?) and this is what happens when you've been on the Island for hundreds upon hundreds of years. A kind of warped, high-speed evolution.
And yes, once again I wanted to slap Kate. Of all the times for her to get decisive and take matters into her own hands and go running off at the mouth. I did enjoy Sawyer's grim satisfaction in putting her in her place by playing the recording, though.
Next week's previews almost made me cry when you see Desmond
tells Charlie that this time he really has to die. Remember; the writers said that two major characters will die by this season's end.
But that doesn't mean that the Island won't bring them back to life again, right?

Did I miss something? Who is Jacob, and when has Ben ever talked to dead people?
Turtle on 10/5/2007 at 16:26
I hope Locke dies.
I can't wait until Charlie dies.
Oh, and also, Jack.
I guess I'm in the minority, but there you go.

Oh crap it's Thursday, sorry.

Just went back to the site Brother R. linked this time scrolled down to see the 11 frames of Jacob. Check out his clothes & hair. Yep; he arrived on the pirate ship and eventually the Island evolved him.
And what the hell is up with that crazy dog picture?
