(if anyone has any info on how many seasons they hope to make, please tell me...)
I've heard it mentioned several times that the show will go five seasons. But after the excessive number of commercials last night, I have my doubts. If the show stays popular, they'll run it until it fizzles.
I thought this epidsode was great, in a quiet and more subtle way. A lot of strange things happened without the need for large explosions and dramatic countdowns.

Though overall I enjoyed it, I was disappointed and annoyed on a few levels as well.
I found it interesting that while Jack was going through his increasingly irrational quest for the identity of his wife's new lover, his father was 50 days into his attempt at sobriety (so said the AA meeting host). Then, when Jack confronted and attacked his father resulting in jail, his wife, while bailing him out, said that when she spoke to Jack's father he was so drunk she could barely understand him. The point being that Jack at least indirectly caused his father's return to the bottle, which caused his father to botch a surgery, which caused Jack to report his father's inebriation, which led to his father's ruined career and suicidal drinking in Australia. Possibly a complicated yet plausible reason for Jack to feel responsible for his father's death??
The episode had for me two "OH, COME ON!" moments, which were rather annoying.
1. When water in such large quantity is rushing through a doorway of that size, one or two people are NOT strong enough to push the door closed.
2. After the door was closed, Juliette knocked Jack out cold with one punch.
Pa-freakin'-LEEEEEZE!
But, I want to know what happend to Locke and Desmond! If the explosion in the hatch was strong enough to blow the hatch lid halfway across the island, how could they possibly have survived?
And, Sayid goin' all Rambo has got to be great!

The first five minutes were great, even though they pulled the same trick as in the former season. I even asked myself if they're going to open every new season with somebody putting music on, but once again I was fooled into thinking I was seeing a flashback happening off the island.
As for Jack... is anybody actually still feeling any sympathy for that guy? I don't know, I wouldn't care much if he just drowned. But then, I'd gladly see anybody removed from the series who doesn't move the freaking plot ahead.

Other than "OH, COME ON!", the only explanation is that Juliette is exhibiting 'super Other powers' the way Ethan did- it might be the writers way of showing that.

I've heard that we'll get the rest of the Losties story in the third episode

I thought Juliette threw an elbow, not a punch?
Also, don't forget the speech she gave Jack about being drugged and not having had food or water to dull the sedative/psychotropic effects of the drugs.
She could have easily taken him down with an unexpected elbow/left cross.

...the bears that figured out the machine quicker than Sawyer were the polar bears.
I got a kick out of Sawyer's retort.
Are the cup & saucer levitating in that pic? And why didn't the club include Ben/Not Henry in the meeting? He seemed rather miffed about that.
I found the look on Juliette's face interesting when Ben/N.H. made it obvious that he didn't give a damn if Jack killed her. And just how old ARE these Others? Juliette talked as though she'd been in on the ground floor when Dharma settled there. She doesn't look old enough.
Why does Ben want to torture Kate? He made it clear that the next two weeks were going to be very unpleasant for her. I'm willing to skip to the end where Ben Gets His Comeuppance.
I'll bring the popcorn.
Otherwise, it was an interesting though lackluster episode imho.

5 seasons is the general goal for most network shows, since 5 seasons=approx 100 episodes=Syndication=Free Money for the Network. And the writers have repeatedly said that they only want to do five seasons, but they've also jokingly mentioned that the possibility exists that the network will make them drag it out longer if it stays successful.

There's obviously tension between Ben and Juliette, but I really think that the bit where Jack almost escapes and drowns them was all put on for his benefit. It may have been Ben's idea that Juliette didn't agree with and that's part of the tension between them, but I think they were fully in control of the situation the whole time.
I think these Others have been specializing in this stuff for so long that they know exactly how to push people's buttons to the greatest effect. And exactly what they're capable of.
And yeah, Jack was weak and Juliette may have thrown a good elbow (which shows she's very competent at knocking someone silly), but I still think she's got the 'super Other powers' like Ethan, and thus wasn't worried about really getting hurt by him.
Which brings me to- the Others don't seem to value thier own lives very much- they take big risks. Ben- the leader and possible 'Him' puts himself into a position where he gets shot with a crossbow and tortured- they could have killed him any time. Why would he do that? He either doesn't value his life very much, or knows that he can take over the situation any time he wants, or maybe he can be cloned or somehow either not actually be killed or brought back or something.
As far as we know Ethan, Goodwin and a few other Others are dead- wouldn't that serve as a warning? Or is it not that big a deal to them all?
Oh, and a friend of mine thinks Ben and Juliette may be the DeGroots. Long lived? Cloned? don't know.
