All the cool kids watch Heroes now. It has all the weird mysteries of Lost, but actually resolves them (apparently, they should all be solved within the season, after which they move on to other mysteries).
I still watch Lost, but I don't find myself looking forward to the next episode the way I used to.

Same here. I definitely think that many people exaggerate wildly when they say how the series has jumped the shark; it's still entertaining, but it has already failed to live up to its initial promise. It's okay now, but it could have been amazing. Other series start out okay and remain okay, but that's less disappointing.
They can still get better with Lost, if they get rid of redundancy and flab. I don't mind character development, but there's a difference between character development and retreading old ground or giving us more scenes with Punch and Judy or whatever the two season 3 dweebs are called.

In the first two episodes I'm getting distinctly Lost
ish style vibe from the recurring symbol (the weird S shape), it's in three concurrent scenes in the second ep. It's on a painting, then a necklace, immediately followed by the shape of the creepy-crawly in a pool. Despite this, being in the midst of what has become a fucking gripping season of Rome (soon to be followed by The Sopranos finale) means that I cannot get motivated by this glossy Hollywood teen star(let) bullshit. It's got the same hook as 24 and Lost, but I can't give it any credit because it's still all terrible acting, hammy dialogue, hack-director tactics, flashy gimmicks, catchy intrigue and pretty faces.

Well, obviously it can't really beat something like Rome. It does get a lot better as it progresses, though, and some recent episodes 'felt' almost like movies quality-wise.
By the way, weren't they working on a second season of Rome?
Thirith on 14/3/2007 at 15:07
I know The Sopranos, Six Feet Under or Deadwood are much higher quality writing, directing and acting than Lost or Buffy - but I think it's legitimate every now and then to want a burger and shake rather than some intricate seven-course menu with subtle taste combinations that tickle the palate. Frankly, I find it rather snobbish (and short-sighted) to say that you can't give the former any credit, because there's a world of difference between well-crafted popcorn entertainment and simple dreck.

Something else that's been bothering me about Lost is that most of the revelations are a bit lame compared to the things I had imagined. The few exceptions to this also tend to be the best episodes.
For example, the bits and pieces they revealed about the others were a bit of a letdown. Sure, I love the answers when I see them, because there's so few of them, but very often they disappoint a bit.
I still remember hoping that season 1 would somehow end in the formation of factions, led by a number of different 'schools' of thought. It seemed possible, considering the philosophical names of the 'leader-types'.
I also had hopes that the seemingly-paranormal children and the presence of the monster would stay as creepy. And what do they do? Ethan becomes a 'normal' human, and the Others seem little more than cruel scientists.
Throughout the series I've been thinking up these what-if scenario's, and in almost every case the answer finally given has disappointed me.
At first I thought that it was just my fault, and the writers could never achieve what I imagine. But that's where Heroes comes in. Despite some of it's failings, almost every revelation has been either what I had hoped for, or even better. So apparently it's possible.

I've heard the same about Heroes, that's why I'm giving it a chance. The closer of the episode I just watched was awesome.
When she wakes up on the slab with her chest open! And it's the second season of Rome I'm currently loving the hell out of.

I can give it
some credit I suppose, after all, in my very post I credited it with having a very decent hook and snappy intrigue plot. I can't credit it with being very clever, well acted or even above par writing after these first few episodes - it's rife with cliche and some awful teen-movie-like filler.
That said, it does have a decent hook and I can enjoy some popcorn so long as it isn't of the Lost-cocktease variety.

Okay, so last night's episode finally kindled that spark of interest that's pretty much been missing for me since season three began. I missed last week's episode, though, and didn't have a clue as to who the guy with the eye patch was (must have also missed/forgotten the part in whatever episode where he's seen on one of the monitors). Since he didn't last long (helluva way to go, btw) I guess it didn't really matter. Where'd they get the map btw?
So Claire is Jack's half sister: can't wait til Jack finds that one out. I foresee more angst emanating from Jack over the fact that his dad was a shithead (Jack really does angst so well and what ever happened to his dad's corpse?). My curiosity was rekindled at the connections the authors are making between the survivors; though once again that just left me with another question. I'm with TheAlbaniac in hoping that there was some sort of supernatural force at work here. I mean, it would be next to impossible to orchestrate getting all the selected people on the same plane at the same time and then manufacturing a mother of a storm that would cause the plane to crash on the island with only those that were selected actually surviving. And why this bunch? So far, the main characters were all rejected from 'The List' (except Walt), so what was the point?
Edit: I just checked out the Lost site and clicked on 'Connections'. I'd forgotten most of them and never noticed others. Pretty interesting. (
http://lostwiki.abc.com/page/Characters%3A%20The%20Back%20Stories) I also noticed that they have Mr. Eko still listed among the living; not in the 'Gone but not forgotten' section of the characters. Deliberate or just an oversight?
And then we find Jack playing football like he didn't have a care in the world when our hapless heroine catches sight of him; from the look on her face I half expected Kate to shoot him. Does that mean the rescue is off? I also missed next week's previews, so I don't know if Kate gets recaptured. And I still can't figure out why she's so damned driven regarding Jack.
I'm rather curious to see how long Desmond can continue protecting Charlie. Hopefully, Charlie will have a 'very near death' experience which will cancel out the 'pretty much probable death' that Desmond keeps forseeing. At least Claire knows the truth now and will think nothing of Charlie's going off with Desmond for otherwise seemingly odd pursuits. I just wonder how long Des can keep up the knight in shining armor routine.
And what ever happened to Sun's pregnancy? She was pregnant last season and I don't recall any mention of it being made so far this season.
It would also be nice to know how Rose & Bernie are doing. Though thank the powers that be they've been keeping the focus on Ken & Barbie minimal.
All in all, a very interesting episode.
(The Thief in me wants to sneak into the compound, find the security switch and turn it off, while discovering 'Importantly Relevant Documents' and making off with them.) :o

But he already had a "near death" experience, when Ethan left him hanging on a tree in the first season. Maybe that's what triggered all of this?
And yeah, this was indeed a rather interesting episode.

Considering it's only been about 3 weeks, show time, since she found out, it's not like her pregnancy is a huge pressing concern.
