I am replaying Thief Gold for the first time in over 20 years. I have just retrieved the Talisman of Fire and want to return to the place where the mission ends. There is a tunnel across a pit of lava. I have tried many times to jump across to the tunnel and failed. I don't want to take the long way back. Is there a trick to making the jump? Does bunny hopping still work in Thief Gold?
Also, I have not figured out how to leave this place except by the tunnel.

Did you use the lever to make the bridge extend? How did you get there in the first place?

Yes, I extended the bridge. I am now at the furthest destination, have the Talisman of Fire an want to start the return journey.

Head back to the bridge with the Talisman, and head out from there.

That jump across the lava was possible in olddark, and should be even easier in newdark. Make sure you strafe-run and jump, that's faster.

How do you strafe-run? I saw it mentioned, but had no idea how to do it. I saw a video of someone running at an angle toward the tunnel. Is that it?

strafe -run/jump is done by pushing forward and left or right and facing past 10 or 50 min past hour on a clock degrees from direction you want to go
also in thief 1 you can bunny hop farther=face where you want to go ,get back a ways and jump while running forward right as you land rejump if done right you go fast in speed and jump further

I wish I had a speed potion, but I didn't select one because I've never needed one.

I'm confused, can't you just backtrack across the bridge you extended? That's always how I've done it.
