thirty minutes is a good mark. Also, its more effective to do interval training. It sucks hard if you're doing it right, but you will see results. One routine I'd use that was effective would be to run 7 miles , going at a full out sprint for a quarter of a mile, jogging for a half mile, and then repeating. I recommend doing this on an outdoors track or trail if possible because a treadmill can not simulate the effects of your body momentum:you're just moving your legs. However, I actually found a treadmill to be more effective for interval workouts because it gives me much better control over my speed. When you're on a treadmill, you aren't going to unconsciously slow as you tire. In order to slow down, you need to make a conscious decision to adjust the speed.

I'm a biochemist (so know a fair bit about metabolism and molecular physiology), and yeah - basically what DDL says.
I find weight much easier to keep off if I do weights 3 times a week because muscle is damned expensive energy-wise. That, and the general shape of your body tends to improve if it's being toned - you don't even have to do large weights or be "ripped" just fit and strong.
Diet-wise, the best identikit diet I have seen si the GI diet, which takes into account the aforementioned desycnhronisation between our metabolism and modern lifestyle. Humans the animals evolved in a feast or famine environment, so our bodies are very stingy with the energy, storing excess away quickly and being very parsimonious in giving it back. Cue modern society meaning we can eat well daily - evolution won't adjust our metabolism without a selection pressure to breed out those who end up gaining weight. Problem with most diets is that they leave you feeling stupidly hungry between "meals", so we end up snacking and fucking it up more often than not. GI diet focuses on food which requires more digestion in order to relinquish its energy, so (a) you stay full for longer and (b) you don't get a glucose spike which triggers insulin release and fat/glycogen production & storage.

The "best" way to lose weight would be a nice and unhealthy gastroenteritis type of thing. Once you've had diarrhea and vomitting for a week or so, your weight issues will be the last thing in your mind, and you'll have lost these kilograms anyway.
:p

Get a liposuction and then host a dinner party to celebrate where you tell all your friends that the meatballs in their mouths were cooked in your own fat

30mins would be fine before breakfast, but once you've got some food in you, you need longer, because you'd have to deplete muscle glycogen first. The trick is to exercise when your body is low on glycogen (stored sugar, essentially). It's more painful, admittedly, but hey.
Could you elaborate on this? I try not to exercise on a full stomach (it's difficult anyway), but on an empty one I usually feel as though I don't have the energy to complete my regular jogging routine. Is there an optimum amount of food one should eat before working out? Or a specific type of food?

Porridge with sultanas is my breakfast of choice. Tastes great, keeps me feeling full until lunch and really good for you to boot.

The sultanas are optional - just leave them out if you don't like them.
