Here's my 2c, mostly historical, though I admit I know much more about Drum & Bass, 2 step and related (euro/UK) scene, as grew listening that, but esp. detroit techno and minimalistic techno (Plastikman etc.) had it's strong influences.

Larry Levan and famous Paradise Garage club in NYC played very eclectic stuff from any genre from any music style, if it just fit the set and reflected the mood of clubbers. That's where a lot of techno movement started in States. Junior Vasquez with Twilo and Sound Factory, also in NYC continued where Levan left. If you are in NYC, I highly recommend now Cielo, which has won numerous awards for best club, and for a reason.
