Does anybody know what techno actually is?

Each time I go back to that thing I love it more, and I always find someone on there that I decide I'll have a listen to. This time it's Cosmosis from the Ambient Psy category. I figured I already have loads of Shpongle and Hallucinogen so why the hell not? Sounds like night driving music to me so Spotify to mobile here we go :D

tHE PART i OH FOR GOD'S SAKE ...
The part I miss most about not having a car anymore is driving fast at night to techno.

Tonamel and Muzman, you all nailed it. Thanks! I guess house is what I'm looking for?
Tao Beach was just a thought in terms of what I'm looking for... I've been there before, and they do play more chilled out ambient stuff sometimes but generally it is dance/house style music (so I guess techno was the wrong term here). It's a fun place but a little pricey and plenty of cheese, and celebrities frequent it quite a bit (I actually sat next to Molly Ringwald this past summer when I was there, and allegedly we just missed Leonardo DiCaprio when we were there... I really don't care about the celebrities, but it is interesting). Doubt I'll ever go back to Tao Beach, but it was Vegas fun during the day (not so much in the evening).

Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin.
I won't be pretentious and use a lot of hyperbole but I'll just say for me Aphex Twin manages to encompass the whole spectrum of human emotion (plus ?). I still don't understand how a single person can produce such an unbelievable range of music in everything from Acid to Ambient to Jungle or Hardcore etc. I mean:
(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAkFBQ6sIcc) Digeridoo, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIeA2ct5Sew) Bucephalus Bouncing Ball, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iiK4MgIPtI) 4, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0s76ZZuJCU) Pitcard, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eozcEBos3q4) Iketa, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44uq4VsIEP8) Radiator, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilJqUzWom2M) Tree, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUT3KoxVzQg) Alberto Basalm, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnBpsUZDiQ0) Donkey Rhubarb, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdZs5PVcwBs) Girl-Boy Song, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-ns5YKbes0) Vordosbn, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS6WaYHqSsE) Mt Saint Michel Mix+St Michaels Mount etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
(I assume you meant electronic music instead of "techno" though, but I guess that's what they call it in the US, has a different meaning over here)
For Aphex fans: here's some amazing new material to be found in (

I enjoy Aphex Twin now and then. I went through a phase where I couldn't get enough of him. You're right, the range of his work is incredible.
Thing with him is the hype and mythos surrounding his music - it isn't just the base of rabid fanboys putting the bullshit out there, but Richard James himself and his bum-chum Grant-Wilson Claridge. The crazy rephlex/warp circlejerk kinda puts me off his stuff. It just smacks of pseudo-highbrow wankerism.
The only record I always return to for personal listening is that three-lp selected ambient works recording. I forget whether it was the one with the dates in the title or the volume 2 one, but it didn't have any drums in it iirc
Have you heard his Analord stuff?

Nah this is an unfounded generalisation. I explained the confusion over the mislabelling in my post.

I don't care about/for any of that, I don't know what it is about excellent music but I guess it makes people passionate about it (in as many wrong ways as right) perhaps much like great games do (see what I did there? hah). I don't really see him feeding into that as much as caring even less for it, but perhaps the occasional pauses between releases amplify the hype or something. Who cares, though.
I think he just likes taking the piss every now and then. He's said himself people shouldn't pay too much attention to who's name is on what and that people are missing out if they only listen to certain brands of electronic music (exemplified by the weird stuff he himself listens to).

I like to think I've listened to all his stuff (well released anyway) and have been to a few live performances :p I love the analords and selected ambient works 1 & 2, the albums (inc. Drukqs or well, most of it, don't care about the criticism) and the acid and jungly and DnB stuff, most every EP.

Sorry didn't read over the thread, I just didn't know what the OP was referring to exactly.
